By Kevin Webb NSRA Autocross Director

I n last month’s StreetScene I was introduced as the newly created NSRA Autocross Director. In that first article we described the current autocross program and how it was designed to help experienced com- petitors traverse the course quickly, but more importantly our new NSRA Autocross program is designed to allow the normal enthusiast to become more familiar with their car’s handling in a dangerous situa- tion—a definite safety issue. This month we’ll cover the basic safety requirements to participate in NSRA Autocross 2025.

  ®

Helmet A helmet is required, and it should be comfortable and fit cor- rectly. A helmet that is too tight will give you a headache after a few runs and one that is too loose will move around and be distracting. The DOT or Snell approval will ensure it’s safe. Shoes Comfort is important and poor- fitting shoes can make moving between the clutch, brake and accelerator pedals difficult. Again, comfort is important, but we don’t allow open-toe shoes or flipflops as they can fall off at the wrong time! Whatever shoe you choose, make sure they fit comfortably and don’t slip when pushed against any of the pedals. Glasses/Sunglasses Some drivers need glasses when they drive, or prefer to use sunglasses, however before com- ing to the track see how they fit with a helmet on. You may find the style you like won’t fit within the helmet correctly. Vehicle Checks All fluid levels should be correct because any low fluids will quickly show up after a few runs. A good starting point is 32-35 psi tire pres- sure, all lug nuts should be tight, and anything loose in the car’s trunk, glovebox, or console should be removed, including floor mats that can slip out of posi- tion and move under one of the pedals.

At the Track NSRA events are designed to get you racing as quickly as possible, but we do have some paperwork to do. You’ll have your driver/passenger waiver to sign, your vehicle checklist to review and sign, and lastly, you’ll get your vehicle number for the windshield. There’s something cool about that official number going on the glass for the first time! Track Layout Every track is different, so it’s a good idea to watch someone run the course a few times. If you arrive early, walking the track is a great way to understand the layout and create your strategy to run it. Timing Your first run should be slow and smooth, slowly increasing every run. Remember, you are wor- ried about your time only and you’ll be surprised at the incremental improvement the more times you navigate the course. Scoring The scoring is determined by the seconds it takes you to run the course, however if you hit a cone, it’s a 2-second addition to your time. If you run off course, then it will be scored as a DNF. Cool Down Autocross is an adrenaline sport, so both you and your vehicle need to cool down after a few runs, giv- ing you some time to watch other drivers and keep brakes, tires and fluids from overheating. See you at the track!
