COMMENT In an era when many independent retailers have struggled to survive—let alone expand—the story of One Stop Motorshop stands out as a distinctly Irish success story. From modest beginnings in the late 1990s to the opening of a fourth store in Athlone, the company’s trajectory reflects not just growth, but a deep understanding of the evolving needs of motorists, mechanics, and the wider automotive trade. Founded in 1998, One Stop Motorshop began as a family-run operation in the northwest of Ireland. At a time when sourcing car parts could be slow, fragmented, and often frustrating, the business set out with a simple but ambitious goal: to become exactly what its name promised - a true “one-stop shop” for everything automotive. Inside, we visit the new One Stop Motorshop in Athlone and we wish them every success for the future... Pat Burns, Editor

NEWS T oyota is Ireland’s best-selling car brand for the first quarter of 2026 for the sixth consecutive year, securing a 13.75% market share. The Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid was the country’s best-selling car model during the period. Between January 1 and March 31, Toyota sold 8,936 passenger cars, finishing more than 2,415 units ahead of its nearest competitor. Four Toyota models featured in Ireland’s top ten best-selling passenger cars with the Yaris Cross leading the market as number one best-selling model in Q1 2026, along with three other models including the Corolla Hybrid, Corolla Cross, Toyota C-HR Hybrid. Toyota’s electrified line-up led the way in Q1, with Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid, and Battery Electric vehicles accounting for 99.81% of passenger vehicle sales. Toyota’s Battery Electric Vehicles now represent 8.43% of Toyota’s sales mix, up 208.61% compared to Q1 2025, driven by the arrival of the Toyota C-HR+, and new Toyota bZ. Across the wider market, electrified vehicles accounted for nearly two-thirds (65.86%) of all new car registrations in Ireland. Hybrid remains the most popular powertrain choice for Irish drivers, with demand up 11.07% compared to Q1 2025. N ew data from DoneDeal Cars shows automatic cars have overtaken manuals on the platform for the first time in its history — the culmination of a four-year trend that confirms the manual gearbox is disappearing from the Irish car market far faster than most drivers realise. Just four years ago, the picture was reversed. In late 2021, manuals outnumbered automatics on the site by more than two to one, with around 56,000 manuals listed against roughly 22,000 automatics. Since then, automatic listings have risen steadily every year, while manual listings have fallen by more than a quarter. The shift on the used market mirrors an even sharper change in new car sales. In 2016, Irish drivers bought 121,661 new manuals against just 24,989 automatics — roughly five manuals for every

Toyota sold 7,981 hybrid units in Q1, representing an 89.31% of its total sales, reinforcing both the continued shift towards lower-emission driving and Toyota’s leadership in electrified mobility. Q1 2026 saw a notable surge in EV adoption, with Battery Electric Vehicles becoming the second-most popular powertrain, overtaking petrol. With a 40.55% increase in market share, electric vehicles continue to attract drivers ready to make the switch to fully electric. Toyota reflected this momentum, recording 753 EV sales in Q1 2026, an increase of 208.61% compared to 244 units in Q1 2025.

This trend was especially pronounced in March, which saw a 34.85% increase in EV sales compared to February, diverging from typical seasonal patterns. The uplift points to a growing consumer focus on the long-term economics of driving, with more motorists recognising the cost efficiencies and value offered by electric vehicles. Meanwhile, diesel and petrol sales continued to decline, with only 8,391 and 13,797 units sold respectively in the first three months of 2026, marking a combined decrease of 45.04% compared to Q1 2025.

automatic. In 2026 year-to-date, those numbers have flipped: 51,138 new automatics have been sold against

rather than a manual car. A generation of Irish drivers is now emerging with licences that legally prevent them from driving a significant portion of the cars currently on Irish roads — including older family cars, most work vans, and the majority of rental cars abroad.

13,703 manuals — nearly four automatics for every manual.

The used market, which typically lags new car trends by several years, has now caught up. The change has a consequence most drivers have not considered. Under Road Safety Authority rules, anyone who sits their driving test in an automatic receives a licence with a Code 78 restriction, meaning they are legally entitled to drive automatic cars only — for life, unless they re-sit the test in a manual. For decades this barely mattered, because almost nobody took their test in an automatic. That is changing rapidly, as learner drivers increasingly practise in the family hybrid or EV

HARRIS BUS & COACH RESTRUCTURES IRELAND SENIOR MANAGEMENT TEAM

Shaun McBride

Willie Daniels

H arris Bus & Coach has strengthened its leadership team in Ireland with two major personnel changes. Willie Daniels, who joined the Harris Group in 2024 as Head of Bus & Coach for the company’s operations in Ireland and the UK, becomes Managing Director of Harris Bus & Coach Ireland. Daniels will drive the business forward through 2026 as it gears up for the introduction of new HIGER V Series models, as well as an electric bus range. Meanwhile, Shaun McBride steps up to the position Head of Coach Sales for Ireland. McBride has more than two decades of experience working in the light commercial I rish drivers are responding to the fuel price crisis in two distinct ways. EV-specific searches on DoneDeal Cars have risen 125% since the outbreak of the conflict in Iran, while diesel searches have fallen 19.5% in share in the same period. Hybrid searches have risen 42.9%. EV charging costs in Ireland have re- mained stable in recent months while pet- rol and diesel prices have surged, giving electric car owners a growing structural advantage. But EV efficiency varies con- siderably with driver behaviour. DoneDeal Cars analysis and experimenta- tion shows that energy consumption rises by around 28% at 120km/h compared to 100km/h. The single most effective change an EV driver can make on motor-

vehicle and PSV sectors, both in Ireland and the UK. McBride started his career at a Volkswagen dealership in the UK, before switching to the bus and coach industry with Mercedes-Benz in Mallusk. Subsequent roles have included time in the minibus conversion sector. Daniels has gained a wealth of experience having worked for more than 25 years in the bus and coach sector. In that time, he has held a variety of roles – from sales to account management and from senior management to operations. With this vast expertise, he is ideally placed to oversee growth and to extend the reach of Harris Bus & Coach in Ireland.

A key focus for Daniels is to develop Harris Bus & Coach’s longstanding mobile roadside and technical support service, which is offered as standard to all HIGER customers. Harris’ own team of engineers, trained specifically to work on HIGER models, can deliver on-call technical support to in-house fleet technicians, as well as provide on-site services. Operators can also use the facility to escalate less urgent work through the dealer network. The offering helps fleets to maximise uptime, recover service in case of a breakdown and provide all-important peace-of-mind when running intensive timetables.

way journeys is to hold a steady 100km/h on the inside lane — it costs very little in journey time and meaningfully extends range. Pre-conditioning the cabin while the car is still plugged in, rather than drawing heat or air conditioning from the battery while driving can extend real-world range in cold Irish winters. Most modern EVs allow this to be scheduled from a smartphone app. Regenerative braking settings, often la- belled ‘one-pedal driving’, recover signifi- cantly more energy in stop-start urban traffic than conventional braking and are worth engaging by default in city driving. “Irish drivers are responding to the fuel crisis in two ways simultaneously — those who can change car are actively moving

toward EVs and hybrids at a pace our platform data has rarely shown before,” commented Paddy Comyn, Head of Auto- motive Content and Communications, Do- neDeal Cars.

INTERVIEW

JOHN DIXON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF DRIV UK AND IRELAND... talks to Garage Trader about the automobile aftermarket and the company's plans for the future.

G et in your car and DRiV! "Quite buoyant” is how John Dixon, the new Managing Director of DRiV UK and Ireland describes the company’s start to 2026. There are 31 brands in the Tenneco DRiV aftermarket group globally – 15 of them are iconic brands emblazoned into the heart of the motor industry, 12 of them are over 100 years old. The Welshman is delighted with the first quarter of 2026, though he comments that some other companies “aren’t seeing it… We do have concerns about the global context; the cost of fuel could see drivers covering fewer miles if petrol and diesel prices stay high…” John has spent most of his working life in the motor trade, starting at the age of 14 in a motor factor in south Wales during school holidays. After leaving the motor factors he joined Mac Tools and looked after their franchisees across Europe for nearly a decade. Wales beckoned again and John spent five years out of the motor trade working as a Sales Manager for Royal Mail. He also was an RNLI lifeboat crew member… “I think, like a lot of us, you might leave the motor industry for a short period, but you soon want to get back into the aftermarket. I had the opportunity to join Tenneco about 15 years ago and haven’t looked back…” Tenneco has many manufacturing sites

across the UK, with its DRiV UK headquarters in Bradford. Away from work John enjoys life on the coast of south Wales as well as being a big rugby union fan. It’s been a great year so far for Driv. John describes the aftermarket as ‘cyclical’: It is just coming out of peak MOT/NCT season, where pothole weary vehicles need new springs, suspension and steering parts to stay roadworthy and to get them through another test. Now heading into the summer season will see the demand rise for air conditioning parts. Driv is the aftermarket business unit of Tenneco and the range of brands that make up the business unit are well known and established in the motor industry: Ferodo, Jurid and Champion braking and Ignition, Moog and Monroe steering and suspension, Nural, Payen, AE and Goetze engine parts, as well as Walker emission and HVAC equipment and Wagner sensors. There are a number of new developments from Monroe (see sidepanel). “We cover 93% of the car parc,” says John. “The sweet spot for us is vehicles around 3 years old when they are just coming up for their first MOT/NCT test. In the aftermarket, engine parts are generally not required until a vehicle is 5 years old, whereas braking will require pads or discs in 12 to 18 months, but much of our business will be generated by cars around 3 years old. If there’s a bad winter the following year will be really busy for us due to the level of corrosion on steering and suspension parts.

John Dixon

INTERVIEW

“As an OE supplier we are producing the parts already so we can get them straight into the aftermarket as soon as they are required and that means that the fit is perfect.” The automotive market is changing with the ever-increasing number of EVs on our roads. “Manufacturers are making internal combustion engined cars lighter and that means that we can make lighter springs for them. Mild hybrids generally use the same suspension as the standard counterparts but it’s the EVs that need stronger steering and suspension parts due to their extra weight, faster acceleration and the fact that they will hit potholes with a greater force.” “We are already manufacturing parts for many EVs and this will increase as we move forward. We have a heavy focus on parts for

Chinese EVs, we are already an OE supplier for a number of them. In Q1 in the UK, 15% of all new car sales were Chinese manufactured cars and March’s top selling car was the Jaecoo 7. The sales of Chinese EVs will filter down into the aftermarket over the next few years but we will have parts for these cars to supply to the trade.” Parts for Chinese EVs is only one area of expansion for DRiV. DRiV has just launched Walker air conditioning and heating parts and will soon be unveiling a new range of Walker starters and alternators, while a new range of sensors will be coming from the Wagner brand. “We very much see ourselves as a bumper to bumper supplier…” says John. Given the success of the companies under the DRiV umbrella, the automotive aftermarket will continue to be well supplied with parts for all types of cars…

VELORIS - PRACTICAL BATTERY SUPPORT FOR WORKSHOPS

A lthough Veloris (previously Ecobat Battery) is Europe’s largest battery distributor, it remains committed to the interests of independent workshops and keen to share its knowledge to help them make the most of their battery sales opportunities. Highlighting the availability of products that workshops increasingly need, but which many manufacturers and suppliers can’t source, is a great example, and what follows are some of the most relevant. Many workshops will now be aware that several vehicles are equipped with two batteries, one for starting the engine and running the main systems and an auxiliary, nominally for its back up systems. However, as is the case with many applications, in the Land Rover Discovery/Discovery Sport, for example, both batteries contribute to the correct operation of the start-stop function, so both need to be tested. Exide is the original equipment (OE) supplier of the EK151 used not only in the Discovery/ Discovery Sport, but also the Jaguar E Pace, F Pace, F Type and XF, plus the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, as well as the Evoque and Velar. So, as the brand’s primary supply partner, it is readily available from Veloris, along with many other auxiliary batteries, to allow workshops to make a like for like swap for the first fit battery. Electric vehicles (EV) are never far from the news and these also feature two batteries because, alongside the high voltage battery that powers the motors that provide their propulsion, is a 12-volt battery that powers the vehicle’s other systems like the lights, doors and windows, as well as the alarm and starting circuit. Interestingly, in common with combustion engine powered vehicles, aside from tyre problems, most EV breakdowns are as a result of an issue with the 12-volt battery. This provides the independent workshop with a great opportunity, particularly as Veloris stocks numerous types, including the AGM U1 for the Tesla Model S and the VARTA A10, which is used in the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Traditional combustion engined vehicles however, continue to make up the bulk of the work in the typical workshop and in addition their day to day requirements, Veloris can again provide solutions as varied as a spiral wound, Optima YTS5.5 AGM OE battery for the Chrysler Grand Voyager and Jeep Cherokee, to an Exide EU80-6, a 6-volt battery for vintage

vehicle applications such as MGBs, and marine applications! Alongside the batteries that independent workshops need, Veloris continues to highlight best practice principles that not only boost battery sales, but also raise their reputations with their customers. Two of these principles are to test every battery that comes into the workshop, and to support every battery with a stable 12- volt power supply while the vehicle is being worked on, particularly during diagnostic processes. To allow workshops to carry out a quick, but accurate battery test, Veloris offers the EBT780, a cost effective conductance battery tester, which provides their customers with a print out stating the battery’s condition. This gives customers the opportunity to proactively replace it and avoid a possible breakdown, should it be nearing the end of its life. Testing also helps technicians to make the right decisions and not be adversely influenced

by a discharged or failing battery, that might otherwise mask an underlying problem. To ensure diagnostic processes are carried out with the necessary voltage, Veloris stocks the CTEK PRO 120 battery charger and support unit. This high quality piece of equipment will prevent the false diagnostic trouble codes and incomplete scans that a discharged 12-volt battery can sometimes cause and help technicians to diagnose faults and error messages accurately, so increasing workshop efficiency. In highlighting its diverse portfolio, Veloris continues to demonstrate its objective of delivering energy with certainty, connecting manufacturers to end customers, and providing the best advice and access to the most suitable replacement solution, so underlining its

position as The Battery Partner. For further details, please visit: www.veloris.com

UFI FILTRATION TECHNOLOGY FEATURED IN RENAULT COMMERCIAL VEHICLE ENGINES

A dvanced filtration technology Renault commercial vehicles, with the company supplying original equipment oil filtration modules for Renault Trafic and Renault Master vans powered by the 2.0- litre Blue dCi engine. The module supplied to Renault integrates both the engine oil filter and the heat exchanger within a compact die-cast aluminium housing. This design allows the from UFI Filters is now playing a key role in the latest generation of system to manage both filtration and lubricant temperature control in a single unit, helping to optimise engine performance and efficiency. At the heart of the module is a cartridge filter using cellulose media from the Formula UFI CELL family. Developed to meet demanding OEM specifications, the filter delivers high performance with 99% filtration efficiency for particles larger than 40 microns. The design also supports extended service intervals, with replacement recommended at up to 40,000 kilometres, an important consideration for commercial vehicle S erfac Limited continues to support the Irish automotive aftermarket with a comprehensive range of premium timing system solutions from long-standing partner SKF, combining OE- quality engineering with practical workshop efficiency. Globally recognised for its expertise in bearing technology, SKF has also built a strong reputation in the automotive aftermarket for its extensive timing system range. Designed to meet or exceed original equipment standards, SKF Timing Belt Kits deliver the reliability, precision and durability required for one of the most critical areas of engine maintenance. Each SKF Timing Belt Kit is engineered as a complete solution, typically including the timing belt, tensioner and idler pulleys, with water pump options available where required. By replacing all key wear components at the same time, workshops

operators seeking lower maintenance costs and reduced downtime. While the filtration module itself is supplied to Renault as original equipment, the replacement filter cartridge is also available to the independent aftermarket. Workshops can source the component under the UFI brand (part number 25.267.00) or the SOFIMA brand (part number S 5267 PE). The cartridge has been designed for straightforward replacement, helping

technicians carry out routine servicing efficiently. Another key feature of the module is its integrated oil heat exchanger, which manages lubricant temperature to maintain optimal engine operating conditions. Instead of using a traditional thermostatic valve, UFI engineers developed a precisely calibrated orifice system to regulate oil cooling flow. This approach, refined using advanced fluid-dynamics simulations, allows the exchanger to achieve excellent thermal performance while meeting strict space constraints within the engine bay. The exchanger is manufactured using aluminium with a vacuum-brazing process, improving durability and thermal efficiency while also contributing to reduced vehicle fuel consumption and emissions. The module has been developed for Renault’s latest generation 2.0-litre Blue dCi diesel engine, used in the Trafic and Master van ranges. The four-cylinder unit features common-rail injection and is available in outputs ranging from 105hp to 170hp, delivering strong performance while meeting modern emissions standards.

a professional, long-lasting repair. Serfac has been distributing SKF products in Ireland for over 30 years and continues to see strong demand from motor factors and workshops for the brand’s trusted “blue box” solutions. SKF’s OE heritage and engineering excellence make it a go-to choice for timing system repairs where performance and reliability are critical.

Building on this strong foundation, SKF has introduced its latest innovation - the Engine Master Kit - a comprehensive service solution designed to align with evolving OE maintenance recommendations. The SKF Master Kit combines the timing belt kit and water pump with the auxiliary belt and tensioner system in one convenient package, reflecting the growing trend towards servicing both systems at the same interval.

This all-in-one approach offers clear benefits for both motor factors and workshops. By consolidating components into a single reference, the Master Kit simplifies ordering, reduces the risk of missing parts and supports more efficient stock management. In addition, SKF highlights that the new packaging concept can reduce storage requirements by up to 50%, while also helping to minimise packaging waste.
