Pruett stated that it is important for a company to rec- ognize early that it cannot focus on a host of KPIs at once; they can overwhelm everything the company is trying to correct. “This is very hard for leaders,” Pruett acknowledged, “because you have to accept that there are things that are wrong in the organization that you’re not going to fix. At least, not in the initial stages. Pruett refers to it as a strategy refresh. “We have ‘take the hill’ products, which we encourage the reps to sell all day long. These are the products we make well, and we should keep our sites on them. Next are the ‘Hold the Line’ products. We are going to continue to do them and service our existing clients, but we are not going to do any more of them. And the final category of products is ‘Retreat,’ which we just have to get out of altogether.” As well as the financial review, RRP conducted a plant, client, and product rationalization review. They utilized an optimization team that allows them to align the right plant with the right client with right piece of equipment. We began then to focus on culture. “Culture is the en- abler of all initiatives,” said Pruett, quoting Larry Senn, a pioneer in the field of corporate culture. “If you get culture right, most of the other stuff will just take care of itself.
