Next is participation in the apprentice program. “There are not enough press operators to hire from the outside, so we have to build our own,” she said. “But you have to be highly disciplined with this because these things fall off the rails so quickly. We have to make sure to stay on task.” While it’s important to focus on the business reasons behind each of these strategies, Pruett stresses that the most significant reason is that it is best for the employees. “The long-term benefits to employees are the real rea- son for culture building,” she said. “It demonstrates a cul- ture of learning, development, and improvement, so that the team can lean into it. This shows that em- ployees can be heard, they can participate and that they have ownership in the plant. And these are important ways to get the team engaged.” In this way, future leaders are also developed. Even if those future leaders don’t move into a supervisory posi- tion, they become informal leaders in the organization. RRD also believes in the importance of recognition events and activities. “It is a proven fact that teams that do community outreach together develop a deep cul- ture, sense of belonging, and shared vision,” said Pruett. “So, our teams are out in the community, working at food banks, helping families in need. Plant meetings and town halls are also critical. Pruett again stressed the intentionality behind these meetings because they require great focus when the demands of running a 24/7 operation can easily pull attention in other directions. “But we felt that it was so critical for our plant leaders to be in front of our teams talking about what the company is doing,” she said.
