As evidence of the efficacy of RRD’s years-long turn- around efforts, the numbers are strong. Over the past five years, the company’s North Amer- ican packaging business grew revenue 25 percent. And that was after jettisoning a $125 million client. So, RRD cov- ered $125 million in revenue and then grew 25 percent on top of that. In 2020, the business was losing money. Now the busi- ness is in double-digit EBITDA. In terms of culture, since the turnaround efforts went into effect, the company has improved turnover by 28 percent. Taking a holistic view of everything that has happened with the culture of RRD over the past few years, Pruett stresses a few key takeaways: “Culture is the true engine of turnarounds, of change management, of improvement initiatives,” she said. “Inten- tionality versus just letting it morph is the way to go. Treat it as if you were treating a make ready production project. What are the 10 things you’re going to do this year? “Culture change is a multi-year journey,” she continued. “You’re never going to say, yes, now our culture is perfect, and we are done.
