About Riley Children’s Health In 1924, the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children opened as the state’s first pediatric hospital. The building serves as a memorial for the Hoosier poet, James Whitcomb Riley, who lived in Indianapolis, Indiana. The hospital is now part of the Indiana University Health System and IU Health Academic Health Center. Today, Riley Children’s is a full-service health system with maternity and children’s services, including 456 beds, with the majority located at our main hospital in downtown Indianapolis.
