JUNE 2024

My daughters also got to take a class at the Broadway Dance Center, where they hold tryouts for the city’s biggest performances. My girls said this was by far the most challenging part, as they danced alongside adults. It was fast-paced and demanded their full brain power and poses. And what kind of dance trip in NYC would it be without a little bit of The Rockettes!? We all got to take a backstage tour of Radio City, and apparently, it was one of the few times no one else was there. That meant we got the rare chance to take photos on the stage. All of us parents stuck around to watch the class, and it was so cool to see my girls learn the different types of kicks made famous by the Rockettes. I think it was my favorite part of the whole experience. My family and I saw many impressive sights on this trip, from Rockefeller Center to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. My daughters were excited to discover the American Girls store because they’re huge fans, so we took many pictures with some of their favorite dolls. There were so many cool things to do in the city that we didn’t come close to seeing everything we wanted to. We’re already booked for another trip to hit some places we didn’t have time for. New York City is so magical. It was fast-paced and energetic, but the people were friendly, and they held doors open and welcomed us. I had high expectations for our trip, but NYC exceeded them. My family and I have taken some great summer vacations, but this one kicked it up, Rockette style. –Kyle Matthews 1 (248) 543-0340

A Kickin’ Good Time Our Family’s Dance-Filled Escape to New York City

I’ve had some pretty epic summer vacations, but it’s hard to beat dance lessons from the Rockettes and standing on the Radio City Music Hall stage in New York City. To be clear, I wasn’t leading the famous kick line or even anywhere close to that. My daughters did all the dancing, and as always, I got to be on the cheering squad, but this time, it was in one of the most exciting cities in the world. My two daughters are in competitive dance, and the whole family got to join them and their studio on an immersive dance trip to the Big Apple. I’m still in awe of the studio’s excellent job organizing this for us and the 90 people in our group. My wife, our girls, and I made a whole trip out of it, arriving a day early to check out famous sights like Times Square and Grand Central Station. My wife hasn’t been to the city since she was a kid, and this was my first time, so there was a lot to take in. Our large group enjoyed incredible moments together exploring the city. We went on a guided tour of Central Park, which was terrific, and then we ate somewhere really special. Gayle’s Broadway Rose is staffed by aspiring Broadway

performers earning cash while they work to make their big break in NYC. So, while we ate, we were treated to their unique takes on everything from “Frozen” to Broadway hits like “Wicked.” The main focus of this trip was the fantastic dance instruction opportunities my girls got to participate in. One day, they got to take two different dance classes led by Broadway performers, including someone from “Some Like It Hot,” which has won some pretty big awards. What’s cool is that later that night, all 90 of us got to see the show on Broadway. They were the hottest tickets in town at the time.

HOIST YOUR COLORS How to Clean Your Flag Like a Pro

COTTON FLAGS Flags made of natural materials like cotton are more delicate, so it’s wise to bring them to a professional. One of the best options for this flag type is to spot-clean the dirty areas. If you need to clean the entire flag, wash it by hand using oxygen- based bleach and cold water. Heat can damage a cotton flag, so don’t put it in the dryer.

The hanger storage is still an issue, and we will continue collecting your hangers! Instead of sending them to the landfill, let us put them to use. We offer a cardboard hanger recycling tote you can request to fill with the hangers you no longer need. It can also help you organize your closet. Thank you for all your help. THE HANGER SHORTAGE CONTINUES

There’s nothing like a flag waving proudly in the summer breeze to show off your love for your country or other affiliation. But you want those stars and stripes to shine brightly! Cleaning your flag requires extra care, but it will preserve it and help it maintain its bright colors. So, whether it’s Old Glory or your favorite team’s banner, we have the tips to ensure your flag flies high for a long time. SPOT CHECK Not all fabrics are created or treated equally. So, it’s always a good idea to spot-check a small section of your flag before cleaning it. You can do this by wetting a cotton swab and rubbing it on a section of

each color in the flag. If the dye comes off, the colors will bleed in the wash.

NYLON AND POLYESTER FLAGS

If your flag passes the spot test and is made of nylon or polyester, you can put it in the washing machine. Select the delicate cycle and use cold water. We recommend only using a little detergent and to remove the flag as soon as the cycle finishes. Make sure to hang the flag on the clothesline, as the dryer could destroy it. Once it has dried, you can remove wrinkles with a cool iron.
