Dr. Jo Ann Browning made history as the first co- pastors ever ordained in the African Methodist Episcopal Church—a groundbreaking appointment that continues to inspire clergy couples and faith communities across the globe.Together, they have led Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Fort Washington, Maryland for over 40 years, transforming a 17-member congregation into a vibrant ministry of more than 8,000 members committed to spiritual growth, social justice, and community service. Pastor Grainger, a former educator and community organizer, accepted his call to preach in 1979 and became pastor of Ebenezer in 1983. Pastor Jo Ann, a dynamic preacher, author, and women’s ministry leader, joined him in ministry, eventually being appointed as Co-Pastor in 1998 by BishopVinton R.Anderson—a historic and unprecedented move in the denomination.Their dual leadership has not only broken barriers but also uplifted generations through global preaching, teaching, and over $5 million in scholarships, along with millions more in community outreach. Both are graduates of Howard University’s School of Divinity and have earned honorary doctorates from A.M.E. University in Liberia.They have preached and taught internationally—from South Africa to Israel—and are committed to developing spiritual leaders, strengthening families, and building bridges across faith, race, and gender lines.
