Cheryl Ivery: Empowering Others and Building Black Wealth

Cheryl Ivery is an accomplished attorney, entrepreneur, and advocate for the underserved. A proud African- American woman and single mother from Brooklyn, New York, Cheryl’s journey to success is a testament to resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth. Cheryl's story began in the heart of Brooklyn, where she attended an inner-city high school and graduated at the remarkable age of 16. With a thirst for knowledge and a passion for business, she simultaneously earned an Associate Degree in Business Administration. At just 16 years old, Cheryl knew that building a foundation for success would require more than just a classroom education, so she enlisted in the U.S. Army, determined to lay the groundwork for her future. Alongside her military service, Cheryl worked for JP Morgan on Wall Street, studying under the President of Financial Investment and Growth for International Markets. Her dedication and determination paid off when, at the age of 18, she obtained her Series 7 certification. As she gained invaluable experience, Cheryl went on to serve as Assistant Comptroller for Ferrari Express, a subsidiary of the prestigious Ferrari brand. Despite her early accomplishments, Cheryl’s commitment to education remained steadfast. She returned to school, completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration/Law from Lehman College in New York. She then pursued an MBA from Oswego Collegein New York, a Juris Doctorate from Charleston School of Law in South Carolina, and an LL.M. in Taxation from Boston University School of Law. These academic achievements paved the way for Cheryl to serve as a Criminal Judge for the state of North Carolina from 2020 to 2024, where she dedicated herself to ensuring justice for all. In her quest to give back and support others, Cheryl founded Mada Penny House, a non-profit organization named after her mother. This organization focuses on providing housing and resources for homeless individuals, with a particular emphasis on veterans. Inspired by her mother’s selflessness and compassion for others, even when she had little to give, Cheryl is committed to continuing that legacy of care. Cheryl’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish Barrister Tax Service, a successful tax preparation firm, as well as Ivery Federal Law Group, a law practice that represents clients in a variety of areas including U.S. Tax Court, IRS matters, Veteran Benefits Administration, immigration claims, and military law. With her wealth of knowledge and experience, Cheryl has become a trusted advisor to her clients, ensuring that they receive the legal representation and resources they need to succeed. Now, Cheryl is speaking at the 100-City Building Black Wealth Tour, a platform that highlights her journey and the powerful impact of financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and self-determination. Cheryl’s story is a beacon of hope and an example of what’s possible when you commit to personal growth, invest in your education, and work tirelessly to create opportunities for others. Cheryl’s life and career demonstrate that no matter where you start, you can build a foundation for success and pave the way for future generations. Her message to the next generation is clear: "Build your foundation, never stop learning, and always pay it forward."
