Check out our May newsletter!

In my earliest years, like for so many, my Mother was the most important person in my life. Nobody else could make me feel better when I was sick or put a smile on my face when I was upset. I’ll never forget how she’d go out of her way to make sure I was happy and taken care of and how easily she’d get everything done in the day. I’ll never forget our bonding moments and the comfort I felt in her arms when I was scared or sad. As we get older we sometimes forget this, but recently I developed more appreciation for the efforts of mothers. For moms, even if their child is 60 years old, they are still their baby. Mothers love their children unconditionally. It never mattered if I made the biggest mess in the world, got in trouble at school, or accidentally broke something — my mom’s love never wavered, and she always ensured I knew just how loved I was. There truly is nothing like a mother’s love. This Mother’s Day, I’m celebrating my mom, my stepmom, and my mother-in-law for the fantastic jobs they’ve done in raising great kids as well as my wife, who is celebrating her very first Mother’s Day. Our baby girl is now 10 months old and is the joy of our lives. Watching my wife grow a tiny human, navigate pregnancy, and give birth gave me even more clarity on the true value of motherhood and how amazing all moms are. These past 10 months have shown me how strong my wife is as a mother and how much love she has to give. I feel honored to get a front-row seat as she has entered the role of motherhood. As a full-time working mom, she works hard and rarely has time for herself, so I honor and value her. I watch with admiration as she ensures the comfort and safety of our daughter, and I urge everyone A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON MOTHER’S DAY A Mother’s Love Endures All

with small children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews to take extra safety precautions when it comes to our youngest children such as properly strapping children into their car seats, using safety plugs on outlets, babyproofing cabinets, and knowing the signs of choking. I encourage everyone, if they haven’t already, to take a baby CPR and first aid course to learn the proper steps to take in the event of an emergency. As mothers, fathers, aunts, and uncles, we are responsible for protecting our young children! This Mother’s Day, I wish my wife a happy first Mother’s Day, along with my mom, stepmom, and mother-in-law. You all are fantastic role models in my life, and I love you! To all moms out there, thank you for giving it your all to be the best mothers! Enjoy your day — you deserve it! Happy Mother’s Day!

THE BEST WAY TO CELEBRATE MYSTERY MONTH

Host a Murder Mystery Dinner!

Did you know May is Mystery Month? There are dozens of ways to celebrate this enigmatic occasion, from playing Clue to rewatching “Glass Onion” — but why not bring those experiences to life and host your own murder mystery dinner at home? Thanks to a plethora of kits on the market, doing so is easier than ever!

If your friends and family don’t like the idea of acting and dressing up, that’s okay — you can still solve a mystery over dinner! Look into kits available through Unsolved Case Files (UnsolvedCaseFiles.com) or Hunt A Killer (Shop.HuntAKiller.com), which involve collaborative mystery- solving without the character work. Step 2: Curate your guest list. Most murder mystery dinners require at least four people, while some include characters for six, eight, or more! Check the number of players on your kit and invite your most creative, analytical, theatrical, and mystery-loving friends. Step 3: Decorate and plan the menu. If you choose a themed murder mystery, level up your event with a matching menu and decor! For games taking place in England, whip up a shepherd’s pie and make a cardboard cutout of Big Ben. For Havana Nights, plan a build-your-own Cubano bar and throw on an Afro- Cuban playlist. You can be as over-the-top as you like. Remember, it’s Mystery Month!

What is a murder mystery dinner? A murder mystery dinner is essentially a real-life game of Clue. You invite friends over for dinner and turn your home into the set of “Knives Out” — without the blood, of course. Each of your friends takes on the persona of a character in the story, and when one of them is “murdered,” you compete to uncover who dunnit. Step 1: Pick your kit. Planning a murder mystery dinner from scratch would take the ingenuity of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Luckily, you have several ready-made mysteries to choose from! You can find boxes from Masters of Mystery and My Mystery Party at your local board game

store, but you can find many options available online, too. Night of Mystery (NightOfMystery.com), for example, sells both in-person and virtual kits with themes ranging from ‘80s prom to Christmas homicide. TESTIMONIAL

“I had specific questions, and Mr. Usry answered them fully, and he asked me some questions, providing some insight I had not considered. All in all, this phone consultation provided more help than I have received from anyone. I am confident that I can take the next steps forward to resolution without having to spend thousand of dollars in unnecessary fees. What impressed me the most was his ability to be quite knowledgeable, well versed in the law, and compassionate; traits you rarely find in an attorney. I highly recommend Mr. Usry, as I know he will be the attorney I retain if/when I need one again.”

Sometimes, Collaboration Is the Answer Attorney Teamwork Won Generous Settlement For several months, he struggled with pain from his neck and his knee injury, PTSD- like symptoms of anxiety from reliving the nightmarish impact, and depression from the stress of dealing with his symptoms. How We Worked Together to Get It Resolved When Mike and Eddie asked for my help, negotiations had stalled. The trucking insurance company moved beyond keeping hardball negotiations in-house. They’d hired a defense attorney to handle them, but Eddie’s story needed to be told, and we made sure that happened through the important people in his life who witnessed the physical and emotional toll the crash had taken on him. Once we’d told that story, the defense attorney made it clear that the insurance company wanted to resolve the case. While some long, tough negotiations followed, we remained true to our strategy, and our commitment to achieving Eddie’s settlement goal kept us focused and patient. Eventually, we achieved a $135,000 settlement for Eddie! Pre-lawsuit negotiations are delicate; you don’t want the insurance company to think you’ll settle cheap. But you still need to aim at easing the insurance company into paying proper value. We realized we could get there, and we did. I’m thankful we achieved a satisfying result for Eddie. That kind of result is what make our jobs worthwhile.

I had the honor of assisting another lawyer, Mike Sarratt of Landrum, with a tractor-trailer accident case. The crash occurred on South Carolina Highway 14, just outside of Greer. Mike’s client, Eddie Ross, got hammered by a trucker who “bobtailed” — the industry term for driving the cab with no trailer attached. Unfortunately, despite the lack of extra weight, the massive cab still caused a fearsome collision. Here’s What Happened As Eddie carefully drove through an intersection at 15 mph, a trucker attempted to turn left in front of him, smashing into his driver’s side at 45 mph with the tractor truck. Eddie’s head slammed into his window, knocking him out. First responders even had to cut him out of the car. Eddie was rushed to the hospital with a broken vertebra in his neck, a collapsed lung, and a gash on his right knee from the dashboard shoving into his leg.

Past outcomes don’t guarantee future results. Every case is different, and all cases depend on unique facts and laws.

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” –Isaiah 41:10 “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” –2 Corinthians 4:16-18 Good News

3 Strategies to Reduce Anxiety

Meditate Sometimes, taking a step back, focusing on your breathing, and letting your thoughts flow in one ear and out the other can help you put things in perspective. JAMA Internal Medicine published an article stating that practicing mindfulness can help ease feelings of anxiety, depression, and pain. You can meditate by following a guided meditation or silently sitting in a quiet area and breathing slowly. While meditating will be challenging at first, it will become easier with practice. Face Anxiety Head-On Many people try to avoid anything that could make them feel anxious. While this method may make you feel short-term comfort, it can cause you to be more anxious about specific scenarios. The best strategy to overcome anxiety is to face it head-on. Although it will be uncomfortable and challenging, don’t

When most people think of anxiety, they likely have negative connotations tied to it. Many make the assumption that anxiety will always lead to panic attacks and fears of major change, but just about anything can generate feelings of anxiety, and not all of them are harmful. However, if your anxiety stops you from doing something, it can hinder you almost every day. In honor of May being National Anxiety Month, here are three ways to reduce your anxiety.

let it stop you! The more you put yourself out there, the less anxious you’ll feel. You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for! Please contact your health care provider if you’re worried about the anxious feelings you get. They can assist you with identifying your triggers, why anxiety is occurring, and methods you can use to reduce your symptoms.

Daily Exercise Physical activity can increase your self-

confidence, improve your mood, help you relax, and lower anxiety symptoms. You don’t have to do anything significant — you can go for a walk, take a hike, conduct at-home workouts, go to the gym for at least 30 minutes, or participate in yoga and Pilates.
