Student Research Symposium Program Spring 2025

Natulie Vera - see Naumovitz - “Ethics Bowl: Exploring the Ethical Situation of the DNR and Improper Consent” (session 19) DeLana Vogelsmeier - “Importance of Early Prenatal Care” (session 20) Early prenatal care is designed to help identify any pre-existing issues the mother may have or could develop during pregnancy. Women often do not seek early prenatal care unless they are already under the care of a primary health care provider. Some women also live in underserved communities that have little to no access to health care. An additional common barrier is a lack of insurance or insurance that does not cover prenatal care. An educational module was developed to educate mothers in those underserved areas about the importance of seeking early prenatal care. It is hoped that completing this educational module will empower pregnant women to not only help themselves, but also their unborn baby. People of childbearing age must be properly educated and given resources on early prenatal care. Sha Wilson, Tru Naumovitz, Natulie Vera, Miliyah Pacheco, and Elizabeth Mcdonald - “Ethics Bowl: Exploring the Ethical Situation of the DNR and Improper Consent” (session 19) Ethics Bowl is a debate event that challenges debaters to determine whether something is ethical or not based on a case study question. Students will be broken into two teams. One that will set up the case and set their view up, and another group that will respond which may agree or disagree with the prior group and encourage further development. Before the close of the situation the audience will have time to engage in questions to encourage if the debaters have fully considered the contexts of the ethical situation being examined. In this presentation, debaters will examine a case study exploring a hospital’s failure to acknowledge a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) and a cardiologist who operated on a man who allegedly gave consent at a time when they were unable to confidently establish, they were sound, body, and mind. This session will ask the question: is it ethical to pursue consent to operate on a DNR on a patient who has given consent who was not in a place to provide that consent?

Nina Winter - “Coached by Culture: The Hidden Influence Behind the Athlete‘s Mindset” (session 12) Although athletes around the world often train according to similar principles, a significant factor in their performance is often overlooked: their mindset — especially how their culture and upbringing influence it. As a Psychology and Exercise Science major here at Missouri Valley College, with an international background and a passion for travel, I have noticed big differences in mentality between cultures. In my senior year in high school I wrote a Pre-scientific Thesis on mental health in competitive sport; now I want to dig deeper and research how much culture influences athletes’ mental well-being and their success. By comparing, for example, the discipline-focused mindset seen in countries like Russia with the emotionally more open approach often observed in countries like Brazil, I hope to identify key cultural patterns in how athletes cope with pressure, failure, and motivation. With this knowledge, I hope to become a mental health coach who helps make sports psychology more culturally sensitive.
