Convocation
The annual ‘Iolani School Convocation Ceremony marked the start of the 2024-25 school year, introducing the themes “Cosmic Craze” for the ‘Iolani Fair and “Forward” as the guiding principle. The event emphasized progress, including the ongoing construction of the Arrillaga Student Center, and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to student growth and well-being. A story about
‘Iolani’s schedule change highlighted the school’s strong culture of care, resilience, and teamwork — key aspects of the One Team spirit. Students were encouraged to embrace these values, recognizing their lasting impact beyond the school, and to make the most of the year ahead.
Keio Students Visit ‘Iolani School During the first week of the 2024-25 school year, ‘Iolani welcomed students from Keio Chutobu Junior High School in Tokyo for a seven-day cultural exchange program. The Japan visitors stayed with host families, attended special classes in lei- making, hula, and video-game design, and explored O‘ahu over a weekend. The exchange enriched the educational experience of both Keio Chutobu and ‘Iolani students, fostering international understanding and friendship. Thanks to the efforts of all involved, the program was a meaningful success.
Kāko‘o Maui Vita Program This past summer, several of ‘Iolani’s certified tax preparers — along with new student, teacher, and parent volunteers — participated in the Kāko‘o Maui VITA Program to assist Maui residents following the Internal Revenue Service tax deadline extension. The initiative, which may serve as a national model for disaster relief tax assistance, provided specialized training on casualty loss claims to help wildfire survivors recover from their lost homes and property. Hosted by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement and supported by multiple local organizations, the program connected volunteers with those in need. Bob Bennet ’75 played a key role in the initiative, spending two months on campus to facilitate remote tax returns. Volunteers gained firsthand experience in tax preparation while aiding a community still in recovery. The program was made possible through the support of the Hawai‘i VITA Program, community partners, and dedicated volunteers, whose efforts were deeply appreciated.
