Happy 70th Birthday St. Alban's Chapel and Lower School Pet Blessing
‘Iolani students celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi with pet blessings during chapel services on October 2 and 3. Students, faculty, and staff brought photos of their pets or favorite stuffed animals to be blessed by Chaplains Arakawa and Morehouse, filling St. Alban’s Chapel with laughter and joy. During the Upper School
service, juniors and seniors also marked St. Alban’s 70th birthday by reflecting on the call to be imperfect people living into God’s hopes for their purpose. The celebration concluded with students singing “Happy Birthday” to the chapel, which was consecrated on October 3, 1954.
University of California Mini Fair On October 3, the College Counseling Office hosted a mini fair featuring admissions representatives from nine University of California campuses: UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz. Students were offered the opportunity to meet with admissions representatives, explore each institution, and ask questions. Throughout the fall semester, the College Counseling Office hosts visits from more than 100 colleges, ranging from large public universities to small liberal arts colleges.
Kay Fellowship Symposium In October, three ‘Iolani students presented their summer research at the John and Violet Kay Fellowship Symposium, held at the Sullivan Center and on Zoom. Selected as fellows the previous spring, the students received stipends and research funds to pursue their projects with the support of mentors. The fellowship, endowed in honor of longtime ‘Iolani biology teacher Papa Jack, continues his vision of research opportunities at the school. Chloe Sanada ’26 studied Succinea snails and their microbiomes for native land-snail conservation. Eunice Park ’26 optimized food distribution routes for the Hawai‘i Food Bank. And Sid Srinivasan ’25 examined the impact of a gluten-free diet on Crohn’s disease.
