From St. Alban’s Chapel

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me (Matthew 28: 5 - 10).”

LOWER SCHOOL / FROM CHAPLAIN ARAKAWA In the quiet dawn of Easter morning, the women at the tomb were met with words of both reassurance and calling: “Do not be afraid … He has risen … Go and tell.” Their fear was met with joy, their sorrow turned to hope, and their journey of following Jesus continued — not to the tomb, but to Galilee, where they would meet him again. This Easter Season, we, too, are called to follow Jesus to Galilee. In our Lower School Chapel services, we seek to encounter God’s presence not in distant places but in the heart of our community — through our prayers, our songs, our stories, and the love we share. This year at St. Alban’s Chapel, we have gathered as a community to celebrate significant moments in our life together. At our Opening Chapel, we made promises to hold ourselves and one another in right relationship, setting the foundation for our year together. We lifted up gratitude at Thanksgiving Chapel, rejoiced in the wonder of Christ’s birth at Christmas Chapel, honored our school’s legacy at Founders’ Day Chapel, and now, in this Easter Season, we have proclaimed the good news of resurrection at our Easter Chapel. Through each of these moments, we add our voices to the generations who have filled St. Alban’s Chapel with love for 70 years. Like the women who left the empty tomb, we go forward filled with joy, knowing that God’s Love continually moves in, around, and through us. As we continue our journey through the Easter Season, we will listen, pray, and sing, seeking to find Jesus in Galilee — wherever love, kindness, and hope lead us next. UPPER SCHOOL / FROM CHAPLAIN MOREHOUSE As Chaplain Arakawa writes for Lower School, it’s powerful to view Upper School Chapel through the lens of Easter … and after! What does it look like right now to follow Jesus into the region of Galilee, to a place that we’ve heard of but have not seen? We did this in Upper School Chapel this school year by approaching the theme of “Answer the Call” from many points of view. Chaplain Morehouse started the year by asking what it means to think of our

calls as a kuleana that we have to heal and build our communities with aloha. University of Hawai‘i Ph.D. candidate ‘Ihilani Lasconia followed this with her own powerful story of learning to answer the call of her Native Hawaiian heritage so she could serve the people of Hawai‘i rather than just perform it for tourists at a lū‘au. Dean Pfingsten spoke of her father and others who kept her rooted in Hawaiian culture as her call pulled her to a college in the contiguous U.S. and around the world as well. For the Feast of All Saints, we talked of those who answered God’s call to exemplary life. And for Veterans’ Day, past ‘Iolani teacher Colonel Dick Rankin spoke to us about the call to military service and the special sacrifices it requires. Students paused at Thanksgiving to share gratitude for blessings in their lives, and at Christmas and Epiphany, we wondered what it was like for shepherds and kings to follow the call of the Christ Child. In February, we recognized our founders with a wonderful talk by Upper School Hawaiian teacher Jon Yasuda ‘04 who stressed the importance of their care for the Hawaiian language, a language allowing the ‘āina to call to us. In Lent, we asked how we clear out distractions so we can listen for God’s call. And in this season of Easter, we commit ourselves once again to following Jesus into resurrection life, into Galilee! Grace and peace to you and your families as you do the same … and please always let us know how we can be helpful to you.
