Back pain can hinder your day-to-day activities. Left untreated, it can even lead to long-term joint, spine and nerve damage. BACK PAIN PREVENTION A little prevention goes a long way. If you want to avoid future back pain, you can make sure you’re being good to your back. Lift Properly. You pick things up constantly. Even if you’re lifting something light, make sure you’re facing the object. Squat, keeping your spine straight. Lift with your leg muscles, as this will reduce the pressure placed on your spine. Use Good Posture. When you’re standing, imagine a string is attached to the top of your head—lifting you up. This will keep your hips, spine, shoulders and neck aligned. If you’re sitting, don’t slouch. Use Strength Training. Your body has hundreds of muscles. These muscles protect and control your spine. By lifting weights, running and swimming,

you can keep them strong. Train your core muscles. In doing so, you’ll easily control quick, lifting movements. It never hurts to visit a physical therapist, either. Get regular check-ups, and make sure your body is in good condition. If you have a history of back injuries, pain or minor aches, don’t hesitate to talk to a professional. Inhale and lift the hips, place a block under the sacrum. Keep the chest open. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat 10 times. SEASONAL RECIPE Christmas Toffee

INGREDIENTS • 1 sleeve of Ritz Crackers (about 16 crackers) • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick)

• 1/2 cup brown sugar • 1 cup chocolate chips • peppermint candy

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat your oven to 425˚ and line 8 x 8 baking dish with parchment paper. Cover bottom of pan with crackers. Combine brown sugar and butter in a pan and bring to a boil. Boil for 3 min WITHOUT stirring. Immediately pour mixture over crackers in the pan and spread evenly. Bake for 5 min to thicken and set the caramel. Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the top. Place the pan back in oven for about 2 min or until chocolate is soft enough to spread. Immediately spread melted chocolate chips so that you have a nice even layer. Sprinkle with crushed peppermint candy and cool for several hours before serving.

Dr. Benjamin Maurer, DPT has always had a fascination with the human body and the amazing things that it is capable of. Motivated to make a difference in the lives of others and to offer alternative options to address pain and injuries, Ben began his studies to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy at

Neumann University in Aston, PA. Upon graduating, Ben moved to Florida in August of 2017 to take his current position as Clinic Director at BayLife Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation. Choosing to further separate himself from the “standard” practice models that are performed at most physical therapy clinics, Ben minimizes the amount of time being used for passive treatments like modalities and instead opts to use active treatments for his patients. Ben approaches each patient with empathy and compassion, listening to their stories, so that he may provide them with individualized treatment plans. Ben enjoys working with patients throughout the course of their recovery and challenging them to achieve goals that are beyond their expectations.
