This month, The Insider debuts an enhanced format, now published monthly through June, providing regular updates on key initiatives, district highlights, and the exceptional work happening across our schools . This March edition features middle and high school highlights. This past week marked Public Schools Week , a reminder of the vital role our schools play in shaping our community . As the week comes to a close, I want to express my deep pride in our district. Our schools are the heart of this community, and I am honored to serve as Superintendent of a district where learning, innovation, and collaboration thrive every day. The dedication of our educators, students, families, staff, and the greater community is what makes our Edison Township Public Schools truly exceptional. Edison Township Public Schools Foundation: Expanding Opportunities for Our Students We have been working behind the scenes to establish the Edison Township Public Schools Foundation, an exciting new initiative dedicated to enriching education, supporting innovative programs, and expanding opportunities for student success. Through strategic partnerships and community engagement, the foundation will provide additional resources to inspire, challenge, and prepare our students for the future. We will make a March announcement calling those interested in trustee and leadership roles to guide the foundation’s mission.

Free SAT Tutoring The district offers free SAT tutoring , as well as free, at- home 24/7 chat tutoring for all subjects for Edison Township Public Schools’ students. Through our collaboration with Varsity Tutors, students can now receive academic assistance via chat with live tutors whenever they need it , or “on-demand.” Additionally, your child has access to free essay reviews, enrichment classes, and self-paced, self-study resources to support overall academic success. Your paragraph text Your paragraph text MCASA Student Scholarship Awards The MCASA Student Scholarship Awards are five (5) $1000 merit scholarships provided to high school seniors and 8th grade students who demonstrate exceptional leadership within their school community. All candidates must complete this form, submit a recent report card and/or transcript, and prepare a 60 second video to be uploaded. All submissions are due by May 9, 2025 at 11:59pm ET. Parents United In Listening, Sharing, and Engaging

On Thursday, February 27, the Board of Education Community Relations Committee hosted the inaugural PULSE: Parents United in Listening, Sharing, and Engaging session. This workshop-style meeting provided parents a direct opportunity to engage with the Superintendent and collaborate with the BOE Committee in open dialogue on key district initiatives and issues. Our Senior Citizens are the WHY in LEGACY Edison Township Public Schools values the wisdom, experience, and dedication of our senior community, whose contributions have shaped generations of learners. To honor and engage our senior residents, we are introducing the Edison Legacy Pass, a special initiative providing free access to in-district events, performances, and activities for resident Senior Citizens.

Finance & Facilities Progress

John P. Stevens High School

The JP auditorium renovation is set to be completed in May, culminating in a full-day concert featuring performances by the choir, orchestra, guitar, and band, along with a special solo piano performance by our superintendent! To alleviate traffic congestion, a proposal for a new access road from New Dover Road to the back of the JP parking lot is in the process of being submitted to the state for approval.

John Marshall Elementary School

The John Marshall expansion project will go out for bid in March.

James Madison Intermediate School

The James Madison Intermediate School project will be open for bid in April.

Woodrow Wilson Middle School

Sports fields will be resurfaced and the soccer and baseball fields will be reoriented. Both projects will have no financial impact on taxpayers.

To The Hive

The Hive is our student-run coffee and snack shop, proudly operated by our self- contained LLD and Autism classes. This school-based enterprise is more than just a shop—it’s a hands-on learning experience that helps our students develop essential life and vocational skills. Through their participation, students develop independence, communication, and teamwork, all while running a small business right here at school! Here’s what our students gain from The Hive: Job Skills – Students apply for positions of interest, interview for the job, take inventory, restock supplies, and practice responsibility in a real-world setting. Social & Communication Skills – They practice scripts to appropriately interact with peers and staff, building confidence and interpersonal skills. Money & Math Skills – Managing sales, counting change, and budgeting. Community-Based Instruction (CBI) – Students go on trips to places like Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s to restock supplies, giving them real-world shopping experience.

John Adams Middle School

PLAY UNIFIED

John Adams Play Unified, advised by Ms. Roth and Ms. Hopkins, has so many fun things going on! Last month they had their trip to the Metuchen Sportsplex where the Play Unified teams from all four middle schools played kickball and soccer together. The team also took a trip to Woodrow Wilson to play a volleyball match against their Play Unified team. They are looking forward to March, when they will have a bowling trip with all four middle schools!

NEW ELECTIVES

STUDENT ENTERPRISE

In the Student Enterprise elective, run by Mr. Dailey, students have been exploring the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, developing creative problem-solving skills and conducting research. Moving forward, the students will explore finance, learning about budgeting, managing expenses, and securing funding for a business.

STEM

The new STEM elective, run by Mrs. Turner and Mr.

Bravo, is off to a great start! Students are currently being

introduced to the Engineering and Design Process and utilizing the process to create paper airplanes! Next, students will be exploring different careers in STEM. In honor of STEM month in March, students will be able to present their career and creation in a science fair style presentation.

MIC DROP

The first semester of mic drop was a hit! Taught by Mr. Peach, students learned the art of public speaking, improv, script writing, podcasting, and creating and editing video projects. Students worked on these skills using various projects on topics of their own choosing. It’s always a great time in Mic Drop!

STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD

JAMS recently launched a new initiative - the Middle School Student Advisory Board. Made up of students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, the group is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and welcoming school environment. The advisory board, led by Assistant Principal Mr. Blekeski, along with teachers Mrs. Osmond, Ms. Queenan, and Mr. Coyle, will lead efforts to make the school a place where all students feel welcomed, heard, and inspired to participate fully.

John Adams Middle School hosted its annual Musicalathon on February 6th with the entire music department participating! The fundraising event was kicked off by 5th grade orchestra students from JMI and MLK elementary schools. The JAMS orchestra students, led by Mrs. Montana, performed next playing some rocking tunes and finished the orchestra portion of the evening with a combined piece, 5th grade through 8th grade students performing together! Then the JAMS Chorus students performed, led by Mr. Borja, in the cafeteria serenading audience members with songs from Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga. Finally the JAMS band students, led by Mr. Mulcahy, finished the evening strong with performances by the concert bands and the Top Jazz band. The evening was a great success, raising funds for the department and bringing joy to all who attended the performance. MUSICALATHON

ACES

ACES students, and advisor Mr. Sack, are making a difference in the Edison community by participating in Read Across America, sharing their love of reading with JMI students. As they read aloud, they not only encourage literacy, but also explore meaningful questions about personal growth and the future.

STUDENT DEI TEAM

The Student DEI Team, led by Mrs. Cardoso, is hard at work preparing for their leadership conference in March. In small groups, the students are working to help combat issues they identified within our school community- competition with grades and stress. Students are working to create classroom lessons to help teach the 6th graders strategies to cope within these two areas.

HUDDLE UP SYMPOSIUM

On Tuesday, January 28th JAMS held its first annual Huddle Up Symposium where 75 students highlighted their interest projects. The Huddle Up students presented to parents, community members, NJ Department of Education representatives, and their peers. The themes of the project varied in nature, touching on sports, community service efforts, and artistic endeavors to name a few. Students honed their presentation skills by sharing their interests to small groups and the feedback was tremendous! A special thanks to the six Huddle Up teachers who guided them through the process: Ms. Hickman, Ms. Hopkins, Mrs. Maiorana, Mr. Redding, Mr. Sudia, and Mr. Saverino.

Thomas Jefferson Middle School Congratulations to Coach Ryan and the TJMS Girls' Basketball Team! 1st Place Winners at the Edison Public Schools Basketball Tournament! A huge shout out to the talented Thomas Jefferson Middle School (TJMS) athletes for their outstanding performance in the Edison Public Schools Girls' Basketball Tournament! With dedication, teamwork, and skill, they earned the 1st Place trophy, showcasing their hard work and determination. We are especially proud of Coach Kelly Ryan for uniting students of all abilities into a supportive, dynamic team. Under her guidance, every player contributed to the team's success, building trust, communication, and resilience—key factors in their well- earned victory. This win reflects the players’ hard work, sportsmanship, and commitment, proving the power of teamwork and determination. Way to go, TJMS! Let’s keep the momentum going and continue making our school community proud!

Empowering Change for a Sustainable Future: Second Annual TJMS Green Fair The Second Annual Green Fair is a platform for students to showcase their passion for sustainability, innovation, and environmental impact. Featuring student-led presentations on conservation, sustainability, and real-world environmental challenges, this event highlights the power of young minds in driving change. Guided by our dedicated science teachers and Science Supervisor Janice Perlin, students have developed research questions, explored sustainable solutions, and refined their projects through mentorship and feedback. Those interested can continue their research beyond the event, deepening their work and contributing to long-term environmental efforts.

Empowering TJMS Voices: Public Speaking Showcase Highlights Student Growth Held on January 23, 2025, the showcase celebrated the achievements of students in the Mic Drop: Confident and Creative Expression elective under instructor Jamie Sackie. This event highlighted their growth in public speaking and modern digital communication. The Green Fair embodies the ingenuity and dedication of our students, proving that small actions lead to big change. Inspired by Bill Nye, “To leave the world better than you found it, sometimes you have to pick up other people’s trash,” we hope this event inspires action whether through conservation, innovation, or everyday choices. Let’s make this year’s Green Fair an unforgettable event, full of inspiration and action, as we continue to work towards a greener, healthier planet for all!

Students developed confidence, overcame stage fright, and refined key techniques like posture, tone, and pacing. They also explored multimedia tools, integrating podcasting and broadcast techniques to enhance their messaging—valuable skills for academic and professional success. The showcase featured speeches and digital projects on impactful topics such as body positivity, climate change, religious tolerance, gender equality, and academic pressure. By combining traditional public speaking with digital media, students demonstrated their ability to engage and inspire audiences in an evolving communication landscape.

Woodrow Wilson Middle School Celebrating Engagement and Achievement at WWMS Woodrow Wilson Middle School continues to provide meaningful opportunities for student leadership, family engagement, and creative expression . Here’s a look at some recent highlights.

Celebrating Our First Annual ESL Family Night at WWMS! Woodrow Wilson Middle School hosted its First Annual ESL Family Night , a celebration of culture, community, and collaboration . With over 150 attendees, the event showcased the strength and diversity of our ESL program, which represents students and families from more than 20 countries around the world . A highlight of the evening was the impressive display of career projects presented by 50 students. The evening also included a delicious dinner, providing an opportunity for families, students, and staff to meet, socialize, and strengthen our school community. Special thanks go to Ms. Betty An , our dedicated WWMS ESL teacher, for her incredible efforts in organizing this memorable event. We also extend our gratitude to Mr. Nirav Lad, Supervisor of ESL, for his unwavering support, and to the WWMS teachers who attended and contributed to making the evening an extraordinary experience for all.

Unified Schools at WWMS: Building Community Through Inclusion At Woodrow Wilson Middle School, the Unified Schools program continues to shine as a model of inclusivity and diversity , fostering a learning environment where students of all abilities come together to grow, learn, and connect. Sponsored by a grant from the Special Olympics , the program focuses on breaking down barriers and promoting social inclusion by integrating students with and without disabilities in both classrooms and extracurricular activities . This approach cultivates mutual respect, understanding, and a sense of belonging, helping every student feel valued.

Edison Success Academy Edison Success Academy Showcases Student Growth at Marking Period 2 Exhibitions Edison Success Academy celebrated student achievement at the Marking Period 2 Student Exhibitions , where

students shared their academic progress, personal growth, and future goals. Utilizing the EQUIIIPs process (Edison Questions Used in Interest, Inquiry, Innovation & Problem Solving) , students explored diverse passion projects, from endangered wildlife research to mental health advocacy, demonstrating critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Their presentations reflected rigorous research, inquiry- based learning, and community-focused solutions. The event reinforced ESA’s commitment to student-driven learning, curiosity, and innovation, setting the stage for continued success. Creature Comfort Pet Therapy Brings Joy to ESA Students Edison Success Academy continues its heartwarming partnership with Creature Comfort Pet Therapy , bringing bi-monthly visits that provide students with hands-on experiences in animal care. These engaging sessions not only offer stress relief through interactions with therapy animals but also educate students on pet health, training, and responsible ownership. Supported by the Marisa Tufaro Foundation, the program fosters empathy and curiosity while enhancing students' learning experiences. ESA looks forward to many more enriching visits that inspire both academic and emotiona l growth.

Work-Based Learning at ESA: Hands-On Career Exploration ESA’s Work-Based Learning program is transforming student career preparation with real-world experiences! Once a week, students step beyond the classroom into internships aligned with their interests and career goals , providing industry insights and equipping students with essential skills for the future. ESA is grateful to its dedicated business and organizational partners, including Amboy Ave Veterinary Office, Edison Collision, Jag Physical Therapy, B&H Auto Body, FastSigns, Fashion Ave Hair Salon, Edison Animal Shelter, JFK Hospital, and many more. Recent guest speakers have included representatives from Iron Workers Union 11, IBEW Local 456, NJ Transit, Innovate Salon Academy, UA NJ Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Division, Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 9, and DMR Architects. These sessions expose students to diverse opportunities, sparking inspiration and informed decision-making about their futures.

ESA Students Explore College Life at Kean University Edison Success Academy students gained a firsthand look at higher education during a recent visit to Kean University . Touring the campus, students explored academic facilities, libraries, and student spaces while learning about college life and opportunities beyond high school. ESA remains dedicated to connecting students with opportunities that inspire and prepare them for success.

HORISON is a high school academic and vocational program for students with different abilities. Through this program, students learn life and job skills to become independent. To accomplish this goal, students are provided with academic and vocational experiences that are developed in school and community settings.
