AMS has provided specialized airborne radiation detection systems and aerial platforms to characterize ground-deposited radiation for more than fifty years. AMS conducts surveys of natural background radiation, measures ground contamination following a release of radiation, and provides for detection and location of point sources. Maps are produced to show the extent of the hazard and to decide where to send federal, state or local ground monitoring teams for further assessments. When deployed with a FRMAC, AMS will assist the FRMAC in coordinating all Federal airborne radiation monitoring and assessment efforts. AMS aerial platforms include fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft based out of Las Vegas, Nevada, Washington, D.C., and Aiken, South Carolina.
