(Delivery/courier address: 1301 Constitution Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20004) EPA has authority to establish standards for protection of the environment from radioactive materials, and standards to limit human exposure to radiation. The EPA’s Office of Radiation and Indoor Air (ORIA) develops protection criteria, standards and policies; works with other programs within EPA and other agencies to control radiation and indoor air pollution exposures; provides technical assistance to states through EPA’s regional offices, and to other agencies having radiation and indoor air protection programs; directs an environmental radiation monitoring program; responds to radiological emergencies; and evaluates and assesses the overall risk and impact of radiation and indoor air pollution. ORIA consists of two divisions: The Radiation Protection Division and the Indoor Environments Division, as well as its National Analytical Radiation Environmental Laboratory Division (NARELD) and National Radiation Field Operations Division (NRFOD). The Radiation Protection Division deals with radiation information, federal regulations, cleanup of radioactively contaminated sites, waste management policy, risk assessment, radiological emergency preparedness and response. Among other activities, the Indoor Environments Division provides guidance about the health threat posed by exposure to elevated levels of radon gas indoors and methods to help reduce risks through radon testing and mitigation.
