Loyd J. Bourgeois Attorney-at-Law

For a few years now, our firm has had four core values. These values guide our interactions with clients, vendors, the community, and each other. Multiple team members recently demonstrated that our core value of “We Compassionately Make a Difference Every Day” is not just a platitude on a wall. By recognizing and then “Doing the Right Thing,” they showed how we “Get Things Done.” First, while at a middle school soccer game, Lindy noticed multiple players from the other team trading out cleats as they entered the game. She

provide them to his players. For these players, having the right gear may not make them superstars, but it allows them to play the sport with the right equipment. Next, our Social Security team – led by Christy and assisted by Emma and Emilie – recognized that some of our local clients may need extra assistance with the recent cold and snow. They worked the phones to call and assess needs, braved the stores and roadways to purchase heaters, blankets, and flashlights, and then made deliveries before the weather arrived.

I created this workbook for you to document all the evidence you need to obtain a fair settlement from the insurance company after getting hurt in a wreck; things you may forget with time, like: • The accident details. • Witness information. • The progression of your pain and symptoms. • History of missed work and wages. • Names of doctors and dates of visits. • And more! While we often discuss the importance of these values, putting them into action requires personal decisions supported

Our LJBLegal team couldn’t resist taking a break to enjoy a rare, once-in-a-lifetime Louisiana snow day. We experienced 12 hours of nonstop snowfall, resulting in more than a foot of snow. To put that in perspective, Anchorage, Alaska, has only had 3.8

inches of snow since Dec. 1! We couldn’t let this moment pass without sharing some of the fun with on social media, even poking fun at me and my well-documented (and admittedly curmudgeonly) dislike of the cold.

WHY DO WE SAY, ‘WHAT?’ EVEN WHEN WE HEARD IT?

TIPS TO SKIP THE ‘WHAT?’ REFLEX Here’s how you can avoid those unnecessary “Whats” and keep conversations flowing: 1. Pause Before Responding Instead of firing off a knee-jerk, “What?” take a second to process. 2. Focus Your Attention Sometimes the, “What?” happens because you’re distracted. Put your phone down, make eye contact, and tune in. 3. Be Honest (Sometimes) If you truly missed what they said, it’s OK to say, “I missed that — can you say it again?” It’s more thoughtful than a reflexive, “What?” and shows you value the conversation. Remember, communication isn’t just about what’s said; it’s about how it’s heard. So, the next time you feel a, “What?” coming, pause for a moment. You might realize you already have the answer!

You’ve been there. Someone says something, and before you even think about it, you blurt out, “What?” But just as they start to repeat themselves, your brain suddenly catches up, and — boom! — you’re talking over them and answering the question they asked. I recently listened to a podcast that discussed this phenomenon. When you hear a sound, your brain temporarily stores it in an “echoic memory,” which lasts two to four seconds. However, it takes a little while for your brain to process the sounds after you hear them. This little hiccup happens because your brain sometimes takes a second longer to process what you just heard, or even to decide if they’re worth processing. Was someone talking to you, or was that just background noise? Think of it as your mental gears spinning before locking into place. But while your brain catches up, your reflex to say, “What?” jumps the gun.
