Editor’s COMMENT NEW GOVERNMENT GRANT SCHEMES BOOST OPPORTUNITIES IN RENEWABLES Many thanks to the visitors and exhibitors making PLUMBEX Limerick, our first trade show in the Midwest, a great success. For those who couldn’t make it, or don’t want to wait too long for the next show, PLUMBEX Dublin is coming to RDS Simmonscourt over September 11-12. Welcome to our July/August 2024 edition. Alongside the latest industry news, inside you’ll find features on Bathrooms, HVAC and High Efficiency Heating. Green Acre Grange in Dublin is showcased as a case study with Kerrigan Mechanical delivering its mechanical package, as well as coordinating all MEP sub-trades for the project. Using heat pumps as a primary heat source, backed up by gas boilers, Kerrigan Mechanical’s installation delivers a holistic approach to energy management by reducing both gas consumption and the carbon footprint of the development. For installers and suppliers hoping to expand their presence in renewables, the recent launch of a few new government grant schemes offers opportunity for growth. A new €500m scheme in RoI is offering low-cost loans for energy efficiency upgrades in domestic homes. And in NI, the Sustainable Energy Programme supporting businesses and low-income households has been extended, while a new £20m fund will back businesses investing in energy- efficient equipment. Grant has released new dates for its highly sought-after training courses, which are available both online and on site and cover a range of its heating technologies. Led by Head Trainer Keith Scully, the courses include comprehensive training on the Grant Aerona³ heat pump and Grant Vortex condensing oil boiler. Among Grant’s training offerings, the Heat Pump Technology and Appropriate Heat Emitter Sizing course remains a standout favourite. This course provides participants with in-depth knowledge of Grant’s heat pump and heat emitter technologies, demonstrating how their synergy can significantly enhance efficiency, reduce long-term carbon emissions and achieve cost savings. Offering unparalleled protection against the risk of flood damage in properties, it far surpasses current market offerings by detecting micro flows as low as 0.1 litres per hour. Existing products typically detect flows between a range of 5 litres per hour at best and 120 litres per hour at worst. Capable of identifying even the most elusive leaks, ActivStopLeak can be used as a critical tool in significantly reducing annual water bills. A leaking WC cistern can waste over 8,000 litres, and a dripping tap around 31,500 litres of water per year. Stuart Gizzi, Director at Activ-Tec, said, “ActivStopLeak is not just about detecting

Its advanced technology can detect even the slightest anomalies in water flow, offering a vital line of defence against severe water damage and costly bills.” The system’s intelligent control learns normal water usage patterns to identify leaks or burst pipes early. Upon detecting a potential major leak, ActivStopLeak promptly shuts off the water supply. This mitigates the risk of flooding and associated damage, including electrical

ActivStopLeak further empowers users with a comprehensive app for real-time monitoring and control from a smartphone. Energy efficient. Like never before.
GRUNDFOS HAS LAUNCHED A NEW GENERATION OF SCALA2, A WHOLE HOUSE BOOSTER PUMP CRAFTED TO DELIVER CONSTANT WATER PRESSURE… Pressure boosting like never before
All over the world, homeowners live with insufficient or drastically - varying water pressure but, thanks to the GRUNDOS SCALA2, the days of uncomfortable showers and trickling taps are coming to an end. The SCALA2 will detect any change in water pressure and boost it to the right level immediately. Even if you’re taking a shower while the car is being washed outside and the kitchen tap is running at full speed, the pressure will remain constant and be at the ‘perfect’ water pressure. COMPACT, QUIET PRESSURE BOOSTING IN THE HOME Many water booster pumps on the market today are noisy and take up a lot of space. This can be very inconvenient for homeowners,
especially if the pump is installed inside the house. Compared to its predecessor, SCALA2 tackles this issue head on with a 3dB(A) reduction in sound pressure which is perceived as a 50% reduction in noise by the human ear. SCALA2 offers perfect water pressure, regardless of varying inlet pressure and multiple open taps. This means you can choose the setpoint which fits your customers’ home and water usage, and they’ll get this water pressure regardless of the inlet pressure to the home. Low noise Water-cooled and with a permanent magnet motor, SCALA2 offers a noise level of 44dB(A) in typical use, which

EMMA BUTLER, INTERIOR DESIGNER AT WHITE MEADOW INTERIORS AND SONAS BATHROOMS, OFFERS TOP TIPS FOR CREATING VISUALLY-APPEALING SMALL BATHROOM SPACES… Optimising small bathroom layouts
Crafting a small bathroom layout can sometimes feel like solving a complex puzzle. In a space that sees frequent use and demands functionality, getting the design just right becomes paramount. This challenge is particularly pronounced in smaller bathrooms, where every square inch counts. According to the SONAS Big Bathroom Survey 2024, a staggering 60% of homeowners struggle with storage space in their bathrooms. This deficiency not only leads to clutter, but also detracts from the overall aesthetic appeal of the space. But what is the answer to optimising bathrooms with limited space without sacrificing on style? To address these small space challenges, Emma Butler, Interior Designer at White Meadow Interiors and SONAS Bathrooms, explores the art of crafting functional yet visually-appealing small bathroom spaces. Emma’s expertise, gleaned from years of designing bathrooms, offers invaluable insights for plumbers and homeowners alike and is summarised in her top five tips: • Get off the ground: Creating the illusion of space is key to making a smaller bathroom feel large. A trick on the eye for making the space seem bigger is to try show as much of the floor as possible. Opt for wall-hung units, which maximise
floor visibility and come in various styles to choose from. The SONAS FINLAND Vanity Unit, available in floorstanding and wall-hung formats and extending from 50cm up to 120cm sizes, is a great option for accomplishing this task and comes in a wide range of colour options to choose from. • Reach for the sky: When space is scarce horizontally, think vertically. Painting the ceiling with a bold colour draws the eye upward, visually elongating the room and creating a sense of spaciousness. • Space-saving strategies: Along with wall-hung furniture, a space-saving toilet like the SONAS RUBIX is a great option for optimising space in smaller bathrooms. Its short projection and square shape make it an ideal option for small bathrooms, catering to users of all ages with ease. • Tile tactics: When it comes to your tiles, playing with a combination of shapes and layouts can enhance the openness of the bathroom space. Mixing tile types adds depth and texture, while layouts like horizontal soldiers draw the eye upward, creating the illusion of height. • Niche and tidy: For the shower area in a small bathroom, consider what shower door type will work best for you and the space available to you. The SONAS ASPECT Shower Door Range is a great
option that caters to both large and small bathrooms. If you have the option of adding a shower niche to the area then that is also recommended, as it keeps showers gels, shampoo and clutter off the shower tray and combats the look of a messy bathroom. • Bonus tip: With all spaces, proper planning is important. Making sure you have the right products in the bathroom is paramount to creating a successfully optimised small bathroom layout. A great starting point for homeowners is the FREE and practical SONAS Bathroom Planner, which can be downloaded by scanning the QR code below. Crafting small bathroom layouts requires expertise, innovation and attention to detail. SONAS Bathrooms, trusted by designers and builders alike, offers quality solutions that ensure enduring beauty and functionality. Whether you’re a plumber seeking inspiration, or a homeowner embarking on a renovation journey, SONAS Showroom and its network of approved retailer partners provide the resources and expertise needed to bring your vision to life.
