OFTEC IRELAND MANAGER DAVID BLEVINGS CALLS FOR GOVERNMENTS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER TO ADOPT A SENSIBLE APPROACH TO DECARBONISATION…

Pragmatic approach required if both Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland are to decarbonise heating industries

How best to effectively decarbonise the home heating industry is a topic of major debate across the UK and the Republic of Ireland (RoI) at present. In Northern Ireland (NI), the return of a functioning Assembly and Executive means 2024 could be pivotal for putting in place an agreed strategy for achieving net-zero emissions. OFTEC has written to all parties within the Executive and is looking forward to meeting with MLAs to discuss their views on the role renewable liquid fuels will play in the decarbonisation of heating in homes and buildings across NI. The Department for the Economy is due to issue a Call for Evidence on the use of biofuels for heating, and this will ultimately feed into a comprehensive approach to the decarbonisation of heating in homes and buildings in NI. It will also outline pathways that are stable, predictable and constructive in reducing emissions, lowering energy demand and helping to alleviate fuel poverty. At OFTEC, we know there is no panacea for decarbonisation and we believe most, if not all, of NI’s rural housing stock can be categorised as complex to decarbonise. In scenarios like this, putting all your eggs

David Blevings, OFTEC Ireland Manager, says OFTEC will continue to lobby both governments to ensure biofuels play their part in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland’s decarbonisation strategies.

“With HVO, there is real potential for an affordable solution to the decarbonisation conundrum to be presented to the consumer.”
