The Parson’s House, a charming 1830s property nestled in North Cork, underwent a remarkable transformation in the return of the RTE One series, The Great House Revival. This case study delves into how new homeowners Marie-Claire Waters and Shane O’ Sullivan revived this Georgian property. A major focus for the couple was to make this period home more sustainable, sensitively retrofitting it with state-of-the- art heating solutions. This was sucessfully achieved through a collaboration with Irish home heating manufacturer Firebird. After a thorough evaluation of Marie- Claire and Shane’s home, Firebird’s technical team, led by Technical Manager Damien O’Sullivan, suggested its energy- efficient Enviroair 8kW Air-to-Water Heat Pump as the ideal solution. This advanced heating technology was chosen for its ability to provide efficient heating performance while minimising environmental impact. Featuring a single Monobloc unit which was installed outside the property, the heat pump provides a compact and space-saving solution. With up to 70% energy savings, Firebird’s Enviroair heat pump is ultra-quiet in operation and features a low consumption pump which adapts its flow rate to the needs of domestic heating.
Firebird recommended its Envirocyl Quick Plumb Unit to streamline the hot water storage process. A large proportion of the plumbing work was completed at its manufacturing site in Ballyvourney, Co Cork, significantly cutting on-site installation time and reducing disruption for Marie-Claire and Shane while they finalised their renovations. Working with advice from Firebird, Marie- Claire and Shane opted for Firebird’s Enviroair Underfloor Heating for the ground floor of their home. Suitable for both new build and upgrade projects, ‘wet’ underfloor heating is the most efficient way to provide space heating as it is up to 25% more efficient than traditional radiators. Underfloor heating generally runs at around 45°C as opposed to 80°C used in radiator systems, thereby saving on energy and running costs, especially when used with a renewable heat source such as the Firebird Enviroair Air-Source Heat Pump. Damien O’Sullivan, Technical Manager, said, “Reviving the Parson’s House was more than just updating the heating, it was about preserving stories and creating a greener future. “With its rich history and the need for
sustainable energy solutions, we knew our Enviroair Heat Pump was the perfect fit. Its efficiency, along with our Envirocyl Quick Plumb Unit and Enviroair Underfloor Heating, not only modernised the home but also honoured its heritage. That’s why Firebird was the natural choice for The Parson’s House.” Long-standing Firebird installer Michael Walsh provided his expertise and was eager to contribute to the project. Firebird worked with Michael to identify the best appliances in terms of size and suitability. Michael said, “Collaborating with Firebird to bring Marie-Claire and Shane’s vision to life at The Parson’s House was a great experience. Their dedication to preserving the property’s history while embracing cutting-edge energy efficiency was admirable. “It was vital to have Firebird’s technical team on hand for any questions. The team’s expertise and dedication to sustainability made the installation process seamless, and we’re thrilled with the results.” The transformation of The Parson’s House stands as a testament to the successful integration of modern energy-efficient technologies with historical preservation principles.
