The “ Dog Days of Summer ” are here. We have heard this statement almost every summer, but where does it come from? And what does it have to do with dogs? This period is from July 3 to August 11. Some people will tell you that the “ dog days ” signifies hot sultry days that are “ not fit for a dog, ” others suggest it ’ s the weather in which dogs go mad. The phrase is actually a reference to the fact that, during this same time, the Sun occupies the same region of the sky as Siri- us, the brightest star visible from any part of the Earth and part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. This is also why Sirius is sometimes called the Dog Star.

In the summer, Sirius rises and sets with the sun. On July 23, specifically, its path through the sky mirrors the Sun. Because the star is so bright, the ancient Romans believed it actually gave off heat and added to the Sun ’ s warmth. Thus, the term Dog Days of Summer came to mean the 20 days before and 20 days after this alignment.

Now, that we all know where the saying came from, how do you beat these “ dog days? ” One of the best ways to cool your body temperature down is by cooling your pulse points (wrists) and the back of your neck. Located at both the comfort stations, the Golf Staff has provided cold towels. We hope these help you beat the hot days. Please return the towels after use for proper laundering and daily replacement.

Save the date! The Fitness Center is celebrating it ’ s 5 Year Anniversary on September 21! There will be more information coming to you soon about the event. We are excited to celebrate 5 years in our beautiful fitness facility. Heading into the summer months, it is more important than ever to stay hydrated! Here are five simple tips to help you stay hydrated: (1) Drink the right amount of water for your body, half your body weight in ounces is the recommended amount (2) Keep a water bottle with you during all of your activities (3) If you find that you tend to forget to drink your water, set an alarm as a reminder

(4) Monitor your caffeine and alcohol intake, as both can lead to dehydration (5) If plain water is hard to stomach, or just gets boring, add some flavor.

We had a wonderful turn out at our first annual Memorial Weekend Murph and will be doing it again next year. If you missed your chance to participate, we will have a fun 4 th of July themed workout July 2 with Kelli. Be sure to register for class. Our summer aqua classes are back! You can try out Aqua Mix, a TABATA - style aqua class on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. for the entire summer, and get your heart rate up while splashing in the pool. If you want to slow it down, we have Aqua Barre and Yoga on Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. where you can tone your muscles and get a good stretch in, all while staying cool in the water. August brings us our next Blood Drive with OneBlood. Be sure to mark your calendar, August 8, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. If it is your first time donating in 2022, Patty Dimetres will have a wonderful “ Thank you ” gift for your life saving donation. Keep an eye out for our August Meditation theme and date, with Sue Deyo.

Wimbledon Callawassie Style will not be held on the grass this year with the golf course construction underway. The River Club kayak launch has been installed! Please see pics below. The kayak launch stabilizers, grab bars and safety rails are the last additions to our new dock, and will be completed (subject to supply chain cooperation) by the end of June for use during Kids Camp. Thanks to all Paddler ’ s Club members for completing our recent survey. The comments and information you provided will serve as a guide for activities and policies for the coming year. Key learnings include:

1.Need more weekend events (both on - island and off - island). 2.Add more social activities in conjunction with time on the water. 3.Add ecology education to on - island paddles. 4.Use technology for reserving club gear, communicating with members.

Moving forward, action items include revamping the Paddlers Club website to include new content; wind, weather and tide apps; safety practices, and interesting local paddling routes. In addition, we will develop a list of social activities at River Club, now that the new dock is in place.

Upcoming trips: - Friday, July 15, at 10:00 a.m., please join us on a one - way paddle from Lemon Island back to the Callawassie Island Paddler ’ s dock. We will then have a picnic lunch there or at the River Club. - Monday, August 22, 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., come paddle on this 3 - mile kayak excursion from the Russ Point landing to the large, ebb tide sandbar that separates Hunting and Fripp Island. We'll ride the tides both ways and stop for a leg - stretch. Stay at the beach area for the afternoon or grab lunch at Johnson's Tavern or Foolish Frog. - Thursday, September 15, 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Cuckholds' Creek. Meander down the beautiful backwater creek in the heart of the ACE Basin on this 4 - mile paddle. Highlights are the remains of the rice culture and mirror - like reflections of the landscape in the dark water.

Please make sure you select “ Callawassie Island Paddlers ” in your email selections under your website profile to receive information on all Paddler activities. Kayak trips are open to everyone so please share with your friends and neighbors. Joining the Paddlers Club is $15/ person annually and includes all the fun parties (with beer, wine, soda provided by the club). Please contact Deborah Dykes at 302 - 545 - 9445 or Deborah5186@gmail.com or Dick Eckhardt at 843 - 987 - 3515 or dickeckhardt@me.com to join.

SUBMITTED BY GLENN MILLER An Introduction to the Callawassie Island Veterans of Foreign Wars Research Club

This club will meet quarterly to give its participants a chance to do their own research into their veteran's (mother/father, grandmother/grandfather, aunt/uncle, or brother and sister) military history. Glenn Miller, the club's organizer, found out when he started looking into his father's military history that whenever he contacted the Army's administrative offices or the National Personnel Records Center, it took a while to get a response from these agencies. The club's goal is to provide each person with the means and methods for discovering what their veteran did during their military career and possibly where they went. Most veterans, especially those who saw actual combat, are the most reluctant to talk about their military experiences. The hope is to inspire each individual to keep "digging" into the available sources (i.e., the internet, VFW offices, news articles, etc.) to discover information that can be passed down through their families.

If you are interested in participating in this newly formed club, please add the Veterans of Foreign Wars Research Club to your email preferences under your profile on the Property Owner's Only website. (www.callawassieisland.org).

Glenn Miller will send an email to those interested parties with information regarding the club's first meeting. You may also contact Glenn at 610 - 349 - 4748; ghm1119@ptd.net.

Hello from the Callawassie Island Women's Club (CIWC)! This past month, our president, Mar- garetMary Gestaut, hosted a beautiful luncheon for the new Board members to meet with the outgoing Board. While we indulged in a delicious lunch of quiche, shrimp salad, sweet berries, yummy dessert and sips of champagne, the 2021 - 2022 Board shared their expertise and experiences of serving on the Board with the newbies. A good time was had by all. The new Board is very excited about taking on their new roles. They will be meeting over the summer to plan many fun and interesting programs and events for the upcoming year. Not yet a Women ’ s Club member? We would love to have you join us. It is a great way to meet your neighbors and get involved in the many activities on our beautiful island. The club typically has meetings from September to May, excluding January, on the second Tuesday of each month. Meetings are followed by an optional lunch especially prepared by the Chef. Did you know? If you plan on having visitors, don ’ t forget about the W ee Chicks and Lame Ducks! It is a wonderful program under the umbrella of the Callawassie Island Women ’ s Club and consists of an inventory of infant and young children ’ s equipment, from cribs to high chairs, car seats to toys and bikes. Items are up - to - date by recognized standards. They are a blessing for travelers who don ’ t or can't bring everything when they come to visit. The Lame Ducks inventory encompasses many items necessary while recuperating from an operation or during rehabilitation. Looking Ahead The Callawassie Island Women ’ s Club will kick off the upcoming year with a reception in September! Look for more information to follow, along with plans for our special programs and events. We wish you and your families a fabulously fun and relaxing summer!

Summer in Your Gardens Our gardens, like us, are starting to feel the heat. Plants in full sun may wilt by the end of the day and this is normal. It is not so much our hot days as our warm nights that affect our plants this time of the year. Plants exhale or transpirate water every day and they need a cool catch up time in the evening to retain their moisture. With our nights, they do not get that, so they look a little droopy. Best time to water our lawns and yards? Very early in the morning. I set my irrigation to run at 4:30a.m. If you water when the sun is hot, the water will just evaporate before it soaks in and is taken up by your plants. If you water at night, you run the risk of fungal disease because the ground will be damp all night. Water is too expensive down here to waste. Learn how to run your irrigation system to its greatest advantage and if the forecast is for rain, turn it off!

Be sure to visit the Garden Clubs Butterfly Garden while you are out and about. It is at the corner of Callawassie Drive and South Oak Forest. It will get more and more colorful as the summer progresses.

It is not too late to plant seeds for continuous bloom until December. A great trick from our President, Laurie Staple, is to use take out containers as mini greenhouses to start seeds. The clear top has vents and lets light in. Just poke a few holes in the bottom for drainage, add soil (seed starting mix is best), plant your seeds, and set by a window or on a porch. I grew many sunflowers using this trick earlier in the spring.

It is not too early to write a check for your ‘22 - ’23 Garden Club dues. Dues are $15 for an individual or $25 per family. Our treasurer, Laura Comes, would welcome your check in her mail tube at 14 Wild Magnolia Lane. Make checks payable to “ Callawassie Island Garden Club. ”

Our Facebook page is updated weekly with gardening tips and there is a blog written especially for newcomers to Lowcountry gardening at http://www.comyagardener.com.

Adopt a Highway Pickup

We had a crew of six on May 25, 2022, who picked up along Callawassie Drive on Memorial Day weekend. The road was not too heavily littered, and we disposed of six bags with approximately 65 pounds of trash. Carolyn, the person who records the hours involved in the pickup, totaled about eight including advertising for volunteers and disposal of the trash. I would say plastic bags as waste is down over the past year, but the beer cans are making up for the bags during the warm weather. We will attempt another pick - up prior to the 4th of July if the weather is favorable and there are enough volunteers. Callawassie residents and the Ecology Committee continue to promote the ecological health of the area in which we live. If you would like to be notified about the next pick - up and participate in this worthy effort, contact Mary Filak at Shatzie2@aol.com.

SUBMITTED BY DOUG WALTERS Results from the 2022 Redfish, Trout, and Flounder Tournament The competition was tough, and the fish were even tougher to find in this year ’ s Redfish, Trout, and Flounder Tournament. The tournament, which lasted 7 days, saw most anglers fishing multiple days in their quest to catch the largest total length of fish in each of the three categories (most anglers now practice “ catch and release ” technique to preserve the stock of fish in our waters). After the week was over and the results were tallied, Mike Karas took the top prize for having the largest total for all 3 species. Mike also topped the Trout category, with Andy Hudick winning the Redfish category, and Ray Diaz winning the Flounder category.

Jerry Nerad and Doug Walters presenting Mike Karas and Andy Hudick with their awards

Next Event The next Tournament (in the planning stages) will be for Spanish Mackerel, King Mackerel, and Bull Redfish. These are the species that inhabit the reefs and sand bars lying off the Low Country beaches. The club members received a briefing on how to catch these fish at their June 20 th meeting when they heard from Captain “ Rico ” Pollitzer, an accomplished charter boat captain, who shared his knowledge about how, when, and where to fish for these species.
