Tidings July August 2022 issue

The “ Dog Days of Summer ” are here. We have heard this statement almost every summer, but where does it come from? And what does it have to do with dogs? This period is from July 3 to August 11. Some people will tell you that the “ dog days ” signifies hot sultry days that are “ not fit for a dog, ” others suggest it ’ s the weather in which dogs go mad. The phrase is actually a reference to the fact that, during this same time, the Sun occupies the same region of the sky as Siri- us, the brightest star visible from any part of the Earth and part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. This is also why Sirius is sometimes called the Dog Star.

In the summer, Sirius rises and sets with the sun. On July 23, specifically, its path through the sky mirrors the Sun. Because the star is so bright, the ancient Romans believed it actually gave off heat and added to the Sun ’ s warmth. Thus, the term Dog Days of Summer came to mean the 20 days before and 20 days after this alignment.

Now, that we all know where the saying came from, how do you beat these “ dog days? ” One of the best ways to cool your body temperature down is by cooling your pulse points (wrists) and the back of your neck. Located at both the comfort stations, the Golf Staff has provided cold towels. We hope these help you beat the hot days. Please return the towels after use for proper laundering and daily replacement.
