It might be cold outside, but that doesn’t mean Sylva has quieted down. Far from it; there’s plenty of fun to be had this January. From the annual Ice Festival to Taylor Swift yoga, don a coat and explore our North Carolina winter wonderland. Maggie Valley Ice Festival While some skirt away from the cold, others embrace it. The Maggie Valley Ice Festival is a showcase of everything winter offers. Marvel at ice sculptures and see how they’re made with live ice carving. Slip down a slide made of pure ice or play games. When you get cold, hit the warming tent and eat hot s’mores. Head to the festival grounds on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 4–6 p.m. to discover the beauty of winter. Taylor Swift Yoga Like the clear serenity of yoga? Appreciate the dulcet tones of Taylor Swift? Head to the Yoga Mill on 620 Mill Street for a fun all- level class. An upbeat playlist of Taylor Swift’s greatest hits and a good workout awaits. Sign up early to reserve your spot and arrive early for face paint, bracelets, and other accessories. Fantasia on Mysterium: The Epic Immersive Theatrical Recital Experience a unique convergence of theater and piano recital at the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center, Jan. 25–27 at 7:30 p.m. Pianist, actor, and playwright Michael Yanette takes audiences on a journey through time and space, immersing them in breathtaking visuals, personal musical arrangements, and compelling storytelling. Capacity is limited, so try to reserve tickets ahead of time. Open Mic Night Every Thursday is open mic night at Balsam Falls Brewing Co. It’s your time to shine! Show Sylva your skills and play your favorite song on a guitar, read a poem about bears, or perform a scene from “Hamilton.” Alternatively, come and support local Sylva artists. Head to the brewery on 506 West Main Street from 8–9 p.m. so you can grab a comfortable seat to ensure the best view possible. There’s always more to do in Sylva from January to December. The new year is all about new and fresh beginnings. So, why not start the year with a quick, refreshing meal that is both flavorful and nutritious?

INGREDIENTS

• 1 medium bell pepper, any color • 2–3 tbsp cream cheese • 1 tsp whole-grain mustard • 2 oz ham (or other deli meat), thinly sliced

• 1 1/2 oz Swiss cheese, thinly sliced • 1/2 small cucumber, cut into 6–8 thin slices • 2 tbsp guacamole or a few slices of avocado • Dash of salt and pepper

DIRECTIONS

1. On a cutting board, remove the stem of the bell pepper with a sharp knife. Cut the pepper in half lengthwise and remove the ribs and seeds. 2. Lay the pepper halves on the cutting board and spread cream cheese inside each half. Spread whole-grain mustard on top of the cream cheese. 3. Layer your deli meat, cheese, cucumbers, and guacamole on each bell pepper half. Add a dash of salt and pepper, then combine both halves and serve!
