THE TRUTH ABOUT LUCK SOMETIMES YOU FIND IT, SOMETIMES YOU MAKE IT
I like to think luck runs in my blood, mainly because I’m 50% Irish on my mom’s side. Of course, whether or not you’ve got Irish roots, we all know that luck is about more than four- leaf clovers and lucky pennies. It’s a blend of perspective, preparation, and a little magic. So, this Make Your Own Luck Day, celebrated on Aug. 26, here’s an Irish blessing I love that captures the spirit of the day: “May your troubles be less and your blessings be more, And nothing but happiness come through your door.” A few months ago, I ran over a piece of metal on the freeway on my way to work at 4:30 in the morning. At first, I thought I was lucky — no flat tire, no immediate damage. But 13 miles later, just as I pulled into the parking lot, my car sputtered to a stop. Turns out, the metal punctured my gas tank and drained it dry. At first, I was frustrated. But then I realized how lucky I was to have made it safely to work and to have AAA help tow my car. I was even luckier to have a coworker, Jan, who could give me a ride home and an extra car at home while
mine was being fixed. Sure, it was a disaster, but I was lucky.
the lottery (unless it’s over $500 million — then, yes, I’ll take a chance), the principle stands. Luck often comes when we put ourselves out there, when we take a risk, ask the question, or go down the path others are too nervous to try. I also believe in “smart luck.” While exploring caves in Borneo with my husband, we had the opportunity to float through a river and exit on the other side. Something didn’t sit right, so we asked to see the exit point before committing. Turns out, it was completely submerged. Choosing not to go might’ve saved our lives. Was it luck? Maybe. But it was also intuition, awareness, and the wisdom to ask the right question. Sometimes, people chalk up success to luck without seeing the effort behind it. I’ve been fortunate to stay in business for 27 years, but luck alone didn’t make it happen. It was showing up, working hard, and pushing through when quitting would’ve been easier. As Thomas Jefferson once said, “I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.” So on Make Your Own Luck Day, here’s to all the little moments — the good timing, the near-misses, the scratches that turned into blessings. Sometimes we get lucky. Other times, we create our own luck. And when we really pay attention, we see just how often the two are the same.
That’s the thing about luck — it’s often about how you see it. Some people walk around declaring how unlucky they are over hangnails. Others endure immense loss and hardship and still find reasons to be grateful. I’m not naturally a glass-half-full person, but the older I get, the more I believe gratitude shapes how lucky we feel.
Sometimes, being lucky means just showing up with the right mindset. A recent trip to Scotland and Ireland reminded me of this. We spent two weeks there and we had a total of 10 seconds of
rain. In Ireland of all places! That’s either luck or my Irish juju working overtime. I’ll take it either way.
There’s a saying: “You can’t win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket.” And while I don’t regularly play

Your Guide to the Ultimate End-of-Summer Party
Feature a Curated Playlist Music sets the tone for any gathering. Create a playlist that starts with mellow tunes during dinner and transitions to more upbeat tracks as the evening progresses. This progression keeps the energy lively and encourages dancing or sing- alongs — the best way to entertain guests. Arrange Themed Decor Choose a theme to tie your party together. A tropical luau, garden party, or rustic picnic theme can guide your decorations, attire suggestions, and menu choices. Incorporate elements like themed tableware, centerpieces, and signage to reinforce the vibe you’re opting for. Choose Engaging Activities Plan interactive games or activities to entertain guests. Popular lawn games like cornhole, bocce ball, or a ring toss are crowd-pleasers. Or, you can get creative and set up a photo booth with fun props — those always promise a fun time. Remember, hosting a late-summer party is a great way to celebrate the last few months of the season. With thoughtful planning, your party will be a hit!
As summer winds down, there’s still time to host a memorable late-summer gathering that captures the season’s warmth and joy. Here’s how to plan an unforgettable party any guest would enjoy! Embrace the Golden Hour Schedule your party in the late afternoon so your guests can enjoy the sunset and cooler evening temperatures. Enhance the party vibe with lanterns, string lights, or candles to create a cozy atmosphere as daylight fades. Serve Refreshing Beverages Set up a self-serve drink station featuring a variety of options to cater to all guests. Include a signature cocktail, such as a fruit-infused sangria or a sparkling mocktail, citrus-infused water, and sodas and juices. This approach keeps guests hydrated and adds a festive touch. Pick a Seasonal Menu Opt for a menu that highlights all things summer. Grilled vegetables, fresh salads, and light proteins like chicken or fish are great choices. For dessert, try a build-your-own ice cream sundae bar or fruit skewers with yogurt dip.

The Family That Sweats Together, Stays Together
MAKING FITNESS FUN FOR EVERYONE
Fit and Fun Staying in shape will happen
Ready to turn family time into flexing time? Staying active and healthy doesn’t have to mean dragging everyone to the gym for endless push- ups or eating kale every day. With a bit of imagination and a team effort, the whole family can make fitness fun and celebrate gains together. From turning laundry chores into speed-folding competitions to jamming out in the living room as a cardio workout, building healthy habits is easier when you’re with the ones you love and laughing! Mop ‘Til You Drop Chores may not be everyone’s favorite activity — that is, until you turn them into high-energy games that work up a sweat. Many household tasks have physical elements that can be a form of entertaining exercise. You could challenge your family to a sweep off, where everyone races with their broom to see who can clean the floor the fastest. Maybe you want to do some laundry lunges while washing clothes or see who can pick up the most toys in the shortest amount of time. Not only will everyone be more motivated to get their household to-do list done, but it will also help everyone get their reps in without noticing.
naturally if you carve out time for family activities that include a little
movement. Daily walks after dinner are low-impact, get everyone outside, and are an easy way to get your steps in. Instead of driving to the library or park, ride bikes to get there so everyone reaps the benefits of cycling, such as improved heart health and better balance. Your children might enjoy trying out scooters or roller skates to get around the neighborhood. Stir Up Good Habits Proper nutrition is a key ingredient in a healthy lifestyle. Commit to cooking together as a family at least once a week to get everyone excited about eating right. Have the kids help plan the entree, pick out fresh veggies at the store, measure ingredients, or set the table. Making everyone feel included in meal planning helps them take ownership of their habits and learn how to prepare well-balanced diets.
