Y2 Scope & Sequence

Y2 Overview Rationale & Playlist

SCOPE & SEQUENCE Y2 RATIONALE

Year T wo (Y2) of OneGoal puts seniors right at the starting line of solidifying their post-secondary pathways and career goals. Y2 begins with a review of the process for securing financial aid for college or trade school, as well as a review of F ellows’ individual My Options L ists. After careful consideration, Fellows formally commit to their selected pathway(s) and then the essential work to secure their post-graduation futures begins!

This essential work includes:

Continued participation in 1:1 PD/Fellow advising Successful completion of the FAFSA or alternative financial aid applications Request and acquisition of letters of recommendation or reference Written essay or personal statement submission Completion and submission of college or trade school applications Find ing and apply ing to various jobs Enlist ing in one branch of the U.S. Military Forces Guidance and support from Program Directors and Champions are particularly important over the course of Y2, as each Fellow moves from being a high school senior to a high school graduate! Champions continue in their supporting role for Fellows during the summer immediately following graduation, as they commence and progress through their post-secondary journeys, or Year T hree (Y3) of OneGoal.

SCOPE & SEQUENCE OVERVIEW

The Y2 OneGoal Curriculum includes the following five Zones:

The Kickoff Zone The Money Zone The Application Zone The Selection Zone The Connection Zone

Cohort 1: Academia -- Designed for Fellows who will pursue college degrees or trade certificates Cohort 2: Career -- Designed for Fellows who will pursue employment opportunities or who will enlist in the U.S. Military Forces Project and an Assessment designed to ensure they are meeting relevant requirements and mastering new learning. These requirements are personally tracked by Fellows on a Graduation Playlist intended to help them meet deadlines and remain organized and focused throughout their Y2 and Y3 OneGoal experiences. Once Fellows have identified their ideal pathways using diagnostic input, they will be arranged into two cohorts: Each Zone consists of topics that Fellows will need to understand, and specific steps Fellows will need to take to be prepared to start their post-secondary journey. This course will prepare Fellows for a variety of post-secondary options that include trade school, certificate programs, career, or the U.S. Military Forces. Each Zone contains 2-4 Modules, where modules provide an organized structure of learning experiences for Fellows to engage in. Each Module will last approximately 1-2 months. To mark the end of each Zone, Fellows will complete a Each cohort is designed to support Fellows through out the entire process of securing their futures following graduation from high school.

Y2 Kickoff Zone Kickoff Zone Overview

Build trust in the OneGoal Y2 experience by sharing and exploring dreams and ideas Develop a clear understanding of the OneGoal Y2 course Determine which post-secondary pathway Fellows want to commit to after graduation The Y2 Kickoff Zone begins by enthusiastically welcoming all Fellows and congratulating them on achieving senior year status. Fellows will explore the following objectives during this Zone: In preparation for choosing a post-secondary pathway, Fellows will complete the O * NET Interest Profiler, which serves as a comprehensive 60 question diagnostic assessment focused on identifying a Fellow’s career interests and next steps. The data generated by the O * NET Interest Profiler* will be use d to scaffold the choices Fellows make and the steps they take as they progress through Y2. That data, along with data from Fellows’ My Options List, which were created in Year 1 (Y1), will be reviewed with the Program Director (PD) in 1:1 PD/Fellows Conferencing to finalize post-secondary choices. *See O * Net Interest Profiler Program Director Notes for details and instructions

Y2 Money Zone

Y2 Money Zone Money Zone Overview

According to the U.S. Department of Education, two-thirds of job openings require post-secondary training or education. In the Money Zone, Fellows will develop financial literacy and secure funding for post-secondary education/training. All Fellows, regardless of chosen pathway(s), w ill complete a FAFSA or alternative financial aid application(s) * , as doing so provides foundational knowledge about taxes, loans, income, and debt. A filed FAFSA also gives applicants access to as much funding for which they qualify, to attend 2 or 4 year colleges and universities, and qualified trade or certificated programs. Financial aid supports dreams of higher education and post-secondary training while also helping Fellows become financially informed. * Fellows with parents who are undocumented or who are themselves undocumented are not without options. Financial aid at the state and college levels may be available for such individuals. Program Directors, school guidance counselors, and Champions should work 1-1 with these Fellows to identify all available means of applying for aid. For Fellows wishing to pursue gainful employment following graduation, understanding the concept of earnings--hourly wages versus salary, job benefits such as contributory and non-contributory medical insurance, and employer, state, and federal payroll deductions, is critical. Completing the FAFSA with support and guidance from the Program Director, Champion Mentor, and a household member will give Fellows the opportunity to examine, in a realistic context, some of the ways finances work at the government, employer, and personal levels. The U.S. Military Forces: Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines are pathways many graduating seniors across the country consider pursuing. There are options within each branch for continued education, training, and earning income. The FAFSA process will offer students much-needed relevant financial information about preparing for military service.

Y2 Application Zone

Y2 Application Zone Application Zone Overview

The Application Zone marks the point in the program where Fellows make use of good decision- making skills to successfully identify their post-secondary and career pathways. While “nothing is written in concrete , ” Fellows should feel that this decision marks the beginning of their commitment to continuing their education/training or joining the workforce/U.S. Military. It is possible, out of need or desire, for Fellows to choose more than one post-secondary pathway, e.g., applying to both college and for a part-time job. Such choices can be supported with input from PDs, Champions, school guidance counselors, and guest speakers--recent graduates who are working, attending school, or both. Admission requirements, including testing, vary from school to school and from program to program, as job requirements (certain skills and/or previous relevant experiences) w ill vary from employer to employer. Fellows will need to make certain they are managing this aspect of the application process for their respective pathways carefully. Those Fellows wishing to enlist in a branch of the U.S. Military Forces will need to meet with a recruiter and carefully consider their O * Net Interest Profiler Data to ensure they are selecting the “best” fit branch and identifying the type of work they want to do as U.S. Military Force personnel. Opportunities for education and training are part of the experience and many individuals become career military members, gaining additional skills, knowledge, and promotions over the course of their journey.

Y2 Selection Zone

Y2 Selection Zone Selection Zone Overview

The Selection Zone is devoted entirely to supporting Fellows as they begin to learn the outcomes of their efforts to be accepted into a college, trade school/certification program, university, a branch of the U.S. Military forces, or to be offered a job or apprenticeship. This stage of the Y2 experience is typically filled with anticipation, excitement, some worry, and sometimes, disappointment. Support from peer Fellows, Program Directors, Champions, school counselors, and families can help Fellows make decisions, manage disappointments, and pivot, as is necessary sometimes, to alternative plans. Being invited to participate in a college or trade program, or being offered a job means just that: an offer has been made. Fellows must be aware of the necessary and required steps they will need to take to secure that offer. For college, that might mean paying a deposit. For employment, that could mean signing an offer letter or confirming a start date. Whichever pathway has presented the opportunity, Fellow follow-through is extremely important. Fellows will need to carefully read any and all received materials (emails, letters, etc.) to understand the expectations they must meet to ensure they are on campus or at that job site when the time arrives. For Fellows choosing to serve in the U.S. Military, the ASVAB determines the branches of military for which a Fellow qualifies. Once determined, Fellows’ next steps are guided by military personnel. Please note that Fellows are expected to continue participating in OneGoal, receiving continued support from their Program Director and Champion.
