Y2 Money Zone Money Zone Overview
According to the U.S. Department of Education, two-thirds of job openings require post-secondary training or education. In the Money Zone, Fellows will develop financial literacy and secure funding for post-secondary education/training. All Fellows, regardless of chosen pathway(s), w ill complete a FAFSA or alternative financial aid application(s) * , as doing so provides foundational knowledge about taxes, loans, income, and debt. A filed FAFSA also gives applicants access to as much funding for which they qualify, to attend 2 or 4 year colleges and universities, and qualified trade or certificated programs. Financial aid supports dreams of higher education and post-secondary training while also helping Fellows become financially informed. * Fellows with parents who are undocumented or who are themselves undocumented are not without options. Financial aid at the state and college levels may be available for such individuals. Program Directors, school guidance counselors, and Champions should work 1-1 with these Fellows to identify all available means of applying for aid. For Fellows wishing to pursue gainful employment following graduation, understanding the concept of earnings--hourly wages versus salary, job benefits such as contributory and non-contributory medical insurance, and employer, state, and federal payroll deductions, is critical. Completing the FAFSA with support and guidance from the Program Director, Champion Mentor, and a household member will give Fellows the opportunity to examine, in a realistic context, some of the ways finances work at the government, employer, and personal levels. The U.S. Military Forces: Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines are pathways many graduating seniors across the country consider pursuing. There are options within each branch for continued education, training, and earning income. The FAFSA process will offer students much-needed relevant financial information about preparing for military service.
