now love luxury; they have bad manners; and have a contempt for authority.” But let us ask ourselves “What happened to this society?” Does it prove that ours w ill last? No! That society perished! “For righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a re proach to any people.” God help us to repent and turn to Him on our knees for then, and then only, w ill we know the blessing of benediction as individuals as well as a Country. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” * * * "Humility is a bag into which Christ puts the riches of His grace." * * * THE REASONS LY ING BEH IND THE FALL OF A N C IEN T ROME form a strik ing parallel to the seeds of moral destruction which have already been sown in our nation. For instance, look at the constant trend in which mem is moving toward being paid for doing virtually nothing. A recent contract was signed in New York City where a certain tradesman is paid for 40 hours of work while actually putting in only 30. Coronet Magazine declared, be fore going out of business, “Any sys tem of government that offers the same rewards for the man that loafs as to the man who works, is going to kill the greatest force that has made the United States the country the whole world has envied.” The point is, by way of illustra tion, that ancient Borne perished, not from wars, but from indolence! Sal vation is free! Thank God for that, but never forget that it demands a total dedication to the Lord Jesus Christ who purchased redemption for us at so great a price. 24
IT IS EASY to fall into the common snare, that just because everyone else does something, u>e, too, must pattern our lives after their exam ple. The clanger is that God’s chil dren may allow themselves to be calloused and almost insensible to truth and righteousness. A scientist illustrated this by use of the delicate Passion Flower. He laid a pencil on a leaf — immediate ly it folded over the pencil. Again and again he did this with the result that the reaction was feebler each time and then the leaf failed to move — there was no response at all. That is exactly what happens when we fail to shun worldly al lurements w h i c h so enticingly present themselves to us day by day. We need to maintain a spiritual sen sitiveness by reading the Bible dai ly and communing with Christ through prayer. Then we w ill know the realization of the Scriptural ex hortation, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect w ill of God.” HISTORY HAS A W A Y of repeating itself. Some people, however, in an effort to prove that we have nothing to fear in this godless society, have quoted what was written about 2800 B.C., and found on an ancient As syrian stone tablet: “Our earth is degenerate in these latter days; brib ery and corruption are common; children no longer obey their par ents; the end of this civilization is evidently approaching.
