BERTHOUD FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT Operations Chief

■ Working in Berthoud Serving as the headquarters of the Berthoud Fire Protection District, the Town of Berthoud is a growing community along the Interstate 25 corridor just 45 miles north of Denver. The town was founded in 1884 and has a rich agricultural history. In recent years ; however, Berthoud has experienced significant growth and development. Overall, the town is experiencing both residential and commercial growth with a 2024 projected population of more than 14,500 residents. The Town of Berthoud is surrounded by scenic mountain landscapes, rolling hills and farmland. It is home to several parks, open spaces, and an expanding trail system. T he most recent addition to its recreational amenities is a 13,000 square foot indoor recreation complex and new bike park. Berthoud is home to TPC Colorado, an 18-hole tour players championship golf course, and an 865-acre golf community to include a clubhouse, community center, pool, and fitness facility. The town is known for its small-town feel and abundance of trees giving its picturesque location the nickname the ‘Garden Spot of Colorado’. The Berthoud area caters to a wide array of recreational activities, spanning from hiking, fishing, camping and boating, and is conveniently located near the great Rocky Mountains and Rocky Mountain National Park. Downtown Berthoud hosts a relaxed atmosphere with local shops and restaurants, and the area provides a strong regional school system to include two elementary schools, one middle, and one high school.

■ The Position The Operations Division Chief manages and delivers the highest level of fire protection services available to the community. The position is responsible for providing leadership, coordination, and direction to the operations division of Berthoud Fire Protection District. The role requires extensive experience in management, leadership, incident command, and fire prevention strategy and tactics in addition to building construction, hazardous materials, and firefighter health and safety.

The Operations Division Chief will collaborate with all divisions of the organization to plan, organize, and direct the activities and functions of the District’s Operations; will coordinate the District’s incident response to ensure consistency among all shifts; and responds to major events and emergencies adopting an appropriate role in the ICS based on the incident type and complexity. In the absence of the Fire Chief, the Operations Division Chief will work closely with the District’s Chief of Staff and Training and Support Division Chief to ensure organizational effectiveness. The Operations Divison Chief position is an exempt status under FLSA and is subject to responding to emergencies while on and off duty; and performs related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements: » Minimum ten (10) years of increasingly responsible fire service experience including three (3) years of supervisory or administrative experience at a level comparable to that of a Battalion Chief or above. » Associate’s Degree with major coursework in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration or related field from an accredited university; equivalent combinations of education and experience » State of Colorado , IFSAC, or Equivalency - Fire Officer II » State of Colorado , IFSAC, or Equivalency – Fire Instructor I » State of Colorado , IFSAC, or Equivalency - Fire Officer III within twenty-four (24) months of hire (Fire Officer III requires Fire Instructor II) » NIMS ICS 100/200/300/400/700 » NWCG S-215 Fire Operations in the Wildland Urban Interface and NWCG S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior within twelve (12) months of hire. » Hazardous Zone Management Blue Card online course upon hire, Blue Card Incident Command Certification within twelve (12) months of hire. » Possess a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record. Additional Desirable Qualifications: » State of Colorado , IFSAC, or Equivalency Fire Instructor II » State of Colorado , IFSAC, or Equivalency Incident Safety Officer » Bachelor’s Degree with major coursework in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration or related field from an accredited university; equivalent combinations of education and experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis. » Understanding of Insurance Services Office (ISO). » Knowledge and understanding of Special Districts, specifically Fire Districts. » Understanding and knowledge in effective management, leadership, and communication. » An approximate 30-minute drive distance (following State and local traffic laws) from district boundaries. may substitute on a year-for-year basis. Certifications and Other Requirements: » 1st Responder/CPR – Basic Life Support (BLS) » State of Colorado , IFSAC, or Equivalency -Hazardous Materials Operations

■ Salary and Benefits The salary for the Operations Divison Chief will be $158,900 annually. Berthoud Fire Protection District offers the following benefits:
