Barnwood is building for the future

It was heralded as one of the most important investments in the Forest of Dean for decades and a Gloucestershire company is proud to have played its part in building it. Barnwood Construction delivered the stunning £15.8million Cinderford Campus for Gloucestershire College in time for it to take its first intake of 16-year- olds in September. This year, 350 of the brightest minds in the district are able to benefit from first-class facilities on their doorstep, with the intake set to double in 2019. And they are learning in stunning surroundings, not just because of the campus’s stunning lakeside position, but thanks to the inspiring look of the buildings. Designed by Gloucester-based Roberts Limbrick, Gloucester compatriots Barnwood Construction were chosen to put the plans into reality. It is the latest in a long line of landmark Gloucester developments that the Barnwood Group has taken on, including the redevelopment of Bakers Quay and the Gateway 12 Business Park in Quedgeley. Simon Carey, managing director of Barnwood Construction, said: “We have been delighted with the response we’ve had from all quarters since the Cinderford Campus opened in September. “It was a challenging build, that had to be built within the cost constraints of the college on a site with ecological issues. “It was also the site of a former open cast mine which was decommissioned in the 1970s, so it wasn’t just a case of putting the building up on a piece of flat ground. “It forms the first part of the regeneration of the

Northern Quarter of Cinderford and will be the springboard for the future development in the area, so we’re proud to have played our part.” From the approach road, the college stands out thanks to its wooden-clad buildings that frame a copper green- coloured central entrance. The library makes the most of the stunning views offered by the college’s location, overlooking a sweep of the forest and lake. The stunning surroundings fit in with the desire to stop what the college’s principal called a brain drain from the area and convince more local talent to develop their skills on their doorstep. At the opening, principal Matthew Burgess said: "We want to help as many young people as possible stay here and achieve here," “The college and the new road leading to its doors from Steam Mills is intended to be the starting point of future development which will see that road extended and more investment follow” l For more information on Barnwood Construction and sister companies Barnwood Shopfitting
