George Phippen
1915 - 1966
From his earliest days, George was always sketching scenes of cattle drives on his one-room schoolhouse's chalkboard or crafting livestock from clay he'd collect from a nearby creek. After his service in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, George joined the Army as a photographer and cartographer for Coast Artillery. Despite this role, his artistic drive never wavered. He aimed to become a combat artist, submitting illustrations to the Army’s Yank Magazine, although he didn't find success in this pursuit. By the end of World War II, George had married Louise Goble and was raising their young sons. The family moved around the Southwest before settling in Prescott, Arizona. Louise struck a deal with George: as long as they could maintain a one-month food supply, he could focus on art full-time. Motivated by this agreement, George landed a contract with a Houston gallery for his oil paintings. He also supplemented his income by creating illustrations for cards, stationery, calendars, and wildlife and horse magazines. His commitment to accuracy was unparalleled, and he took pride in capturing authentic details, earning praise from those who recognized his meticulousness. George's ability to depict the perfect moment with vivid action and perspective endeared him to his audience. What truly set George apart was his sense of humor and lightheartedness, which he infused into his art, transcending the Western genre. He offered an everyman perspective that allowed viewers to find humor in challenging situations and connect with an authentic portrayal of the American West. In 1965, at age 50, George was working on a sculpture titled "Cowboy in a Storm." This intricate bronze figure embodies all the hallmarks of George's work: accuracy, humor, and larger-than-life presence. With support from the local art community, including the Prescott Area Art Trust, Ed Reilly of the Bronzesmith Fine Art Foundry, artist Debbie Gessner, and contributions from The Harold James Family Trust, Jim Chamberlain, and the City of Prescott, this unique sculpture was cast in monumental bronze and now stands at the Phippen Museum's entrance. This sculpture serves as a welcoming landmark to Granite Dells, Prescott, and visitors from around the world, honoring George Phippen's legacy. While many believe George would be deeply humbled and proud of this recognition, he would undoubtedly be even more appreciative of the unwavering support and dedication from his devoted wife, Louise, who played an indispensable role in his life and enduring legacy.
The Phippen Museum OUR STORY
Approaching the Phippen Museum of Western Art from the south offers visitors a breathtaking journey through Prescott’s majestic Granite Dells, where they are treated to awe-inspiring rock formations and sheer cliffs. Amidst the backdrop of sagebrush, cactus, and high-desert wildlife, coupled with stunning vistas, the setting perfectly encapsulates the essence of the Old West. The museum is named after George Phippen, the inaugural President of the Cowboy Artists of America, whose legacy continues to inspire. Following his passing in 1966, a dedicated group of friends, family, and fellow artists were spurred by Phippen's work ethic and inspirational character to establish a facility dedicated to representing Western artists. In 1974, the George Phippen Memorial Foundation was established with the aim of providing a platform for Western art. The inaugural Memorial Day Show, held the same year, featured some of the nation's most talented Western sculptors and painters. Over the course of a decade, revenue from these annual shows, combined with the generous donation of land from the James Family Trust, laid the groundwork for the construction of the Phippen Museum. Finally, on October 13, 1984, the museum proudly opened its doors to the public, marking the realization of a longstanding dream.
Rules of Sale-by-Draw
These guidelines outline the process for participating in a fixed-price sale, conducted through a draw system scheduled for Monday, May 27th at 11:00 AM in the Harold and Mitzie James Gallery at the Phippen Museum.
1.Each prospective buyer must complete an Intent-to-Purchase form for the artwork they wish to acquire. Only one Intent-to-Purchase form is permitted per person, per artwork. 2.Payment must be made in full to the Phippen Museum by either check or by providing complete credit card information when submitting the Intent-to-Purchase form. 3.The Phippen Museum will retain the white copy of the form, the yellow copy will be provided to the buyer for their records, and a pink partial slip will be placed in the corresponding numbered box next to the artwork. 4.To place an Intent-to-Purchase form via phone with credit card payment, buyers can contact Jeannette Holverson at 928-778-1385 or email jeannette@phippenartmuseum.org for a return call. 5.It is crucial that the item number on the slip matches the item number of the artwork intended for purchase. If discrepancies arise, a new slip will be drawn to ensure accuracy. 6.The individual whose name is drawn first will have the opportunity to purchase the artwork. If present at the drawing, that person may decline the purchase by contacting the Draw Sales Desk within 15 minutes of the final draw, prompting the drawing of a second name. 7.Absentee buyers whose slips are drawn are obligated to purchase the artwork. The sale will be processed immediately, and the buyer will be notified post-draw. The Museum cannot be held responsible for any errors or failures in properly submitting Intent-to-Purchase forms. 8.For buyers opting for shipping, an additional charge of $65.00 per item will be applied to cover packing and shipping expenses. Additional charges may apply if the item exceeds 20 pounds. 9.Intent-to-Purchase forms and credit card information of unsuccessful buyers will be securely destroyed, while checks will be voided and returned via U.S. Mail during the third week of June.
