B O O K REVI EWS All recommended books may be obtained from the Biola Book Room, 560 South Hope Street, Los Angeles 17, Calif. F irst L ove By Phyllis Speshock In this Christian story Emily Baird faces love with two young men, a romance in which spiritual consider ations play an important part. With only two years of Bible school train ing she opens a closed rural church and carries on the work with a group of young people. She even delivers the messages! The term “Reverend”—in correct usage is never found without “Mr.,” “Dr.,” or first names and initials between it and the last name; this author is not the only one to break this rule. 155 pages; cloth; Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids, Mich.; $2.00. The W in d ow * o f H eaven By Elise Fraser The seting for this novel is The Deodars, a large, roomy, comfortable old home in San Francisco. Here Jonathan Bradford and his sister Prue welcome many in the name of Christ who have experienced tragedy and sorrow in their lives. Through trial, sorrow and disappointments, the guests of the Bradfords find that God is the solution for their ills. The reader will find help in many types of situations through reading of oth ers who passed through the same dif ficulties - sickness, death, uhhappy marriage, financial loss, job-hunting and the like. 224 pages; cloth; Van Kampen Press, Wheaton, 111.; $2.50. Unto the U tterm o st By Sallie Lee Bell The inevitable—or almost inevit able—triangle situation to be found in Christian fiction today is the heart of this story. A young couple on the mission field are divorced after the missionary husband’s eyes fall upon another. While the book may teach Christ’s faithfulness to those who go through tragedy and the stark dis aster involving the one who strays, this reviewer seriously questions the wisdom of portraying unfaithfulness and divorce in the lives of mission aries. This seems on the same plane with defending motion pictures of crime, lust and greed on the basis of the presumed lessons taught by their inevitable punishment. 216 pages; cloth; Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids, Mich.; $2.50. The Com ing P rin ce By Robert Anderson The author of this volume was

for many years Chief Inspector of Scotland Yard, London. He was not only a world-renowned detective but a diligent and reverent searcher of the Scriptures; his writings have blessed thousands among both the scholarly and the unschooled. This title went through 13 editions when originally published but has been out of print for many years and practically unobtainable. It is an exposition of every phase of the great prophecy of the Seventy Weeks recorded in Daniel 9:24-27 and with out question the outstanding work on the subject. Students of prophecy will rejoice that this work is once more avail able: The prefaces to the fifth and tenth editions include the author’s answers to arguments brought against his material as published in earlier editions. The appendixes contain valuable additional material on the chronological aspects of the prophecy and its historical background. 311 pages; cloth; Kregel Publications, Grand Rapids, Mich.; $3.95. The editor of this volume has thrown into outline form 35 subjeefs from The Miscellaneous Works of . . . Matthew Henry and Henry’s Exposition of the Old and New Testa- ment, the famous commentary. The outlines afford an immediate insight into the great expositor’s thought and method, and they will be found most helpful in every way. 148 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., Grand Rapids, Mich.; $2.50. The material for this book comes from a column conducted by the com piler’s father, Dr. Samuel G. Gamble, for many years in The United Pres byterian under the assumed name of Benedicte, “Well Said!”. The reader will find alphabetically arranged out lines, illustrations, poems, homilies, jokes, epigrams and thoughts. Some of this material is old, much new— all good. Those who like to clip items from papers and magazines will revel in this book. 252 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., Grand Rapids, Mich.; $3.95.
