King's Business - 1955-09

He told the people a host of other things about Christ (v. 18). John’s faithfulness is shown in that he pointed out Herod’s sin of immorality (v. 19) and suffered im- prisoriment as a result (v. 20). Baptism of Jesus (Luke 3:21-22) This was a crisis experience in the life of Christ. It was a part of what He did for us sinners. He did not need baptism for Himself for it relates to the matter of forgiveness of sin and He had no sin for which to be forgiven. Neither did He have any sin to die for at Calvary, but He died there nevertheless for us. So it became Him to he baptized for us “to ful fill all righteousness” (Matt. 3:15). And note that we have appearing in this re markable experience all three members of the Trinity. Helps for the Children The Baptism of Jesus Luke 3:1-22 MEMORY VERSE: "Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased" (Luke 3:22). Many years ago, a herald or messenger was sent before a king or any other im portant person to tell others of their com ing. When God was ready to send His Son into the world, He planned that a messenger should prepare the way for His coming. John the Baptist was chosen to do this important work for God. Eager ly the people gathered upon the shores of the Jordan River to hear this great preach er. Each day many were baptized by John in the Jordan River to show their sorrow for their sin and their desire* to live a life pleasing to God. One day the Lord Jesus was ready to commence His three years of preaching and teaching before He died upon the cross. He wanted to be a perfect example to all who love Him. Before He com menced His work, God’s Son went to the Jordan River and asked John to baptize Him. The Saviour had no sins for which to repent, because He was sinless. He wanted to leave an example of obedience to God. We do not believe that baptism saves anyone. God’s Word says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” Baptism is a testimony to others AFTER WE ARE SAVED that we have become a child of God and that we desire to obey God in all things. Baptism is a picture of,Jesus’ death, burial, and resur rection. We, too, after we receive Him as personal Saviour, are living a new life—we are new creations in Him. To all of those who obey His command ments, God says, “I am well pleased.”
