SUNDAY SCHOOL continued which was often given visitors in that day, Jesus read a portion of God’s Word. He chose a passage from Isa. 61. An inter esting thing about His reading was that He stopped reading at the comma in the middle of verse 2, preceding which there was the prophecy that Jesus was to preach “the acceptable year of the Lord.” Now was the time for that. But what followed in the second half of verse 2, which speaks of “the day of vengeance,” was con cerned with His second coming. This was not the time for that manifestation so Jesus refrained from reading that part of the verse which was not yet fulfilled. In stead “he closed the book” and sat down. A remarkable instance of “rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15). A Sad Reaction (vv. 22-24, 28-30) At first the people of the synagogue marveled at His gracious words, and doubtless the sweetness of His maimer (v. 22). But when they began to con template the claims He had made for Himself in applying the Scripture He read to Himself, and when He failed to do as many miracles in Nazareth as He had done in Capernaum (v. 23), they quickly turned from approval to wrath (v. 28). They cast Him out of the city and in tended to throw Him qver a precipice nearby (v. 29). But His purposes could not be thwarted and so in a miraculous manner, He slipped out of their grasp (v. 30). Helps for the Children Jesus Preaches in Nazareth Luke 4:16-44 MEMORY VERSE: " . . . I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also . . ." (Luke 4:43). After the Lord Jesus Christ had de feated Satan by the use of God’s Word, He immediately returned to His home town of Nazareth. As His custom was, Jesus went to the synagogue to worship. When an Old Testament scroll was given to Him to read to the people, He read Isaiah’s prophecy concerning Himself. After He had finished reading, the Lord Jesus told them that the Scripture which He had just read was speaking of Him. His family and friends and neighbors who were listening to Him became angry at the words which He spoke to them. They took Him outside of the city to the top of a hill and planned to push Him off and cause His death. Quietly Jesus disappeared before they were able to harm Him! Sometimes Christian boys and girls make a decision to follow their Lord no matter how difficult it may be. When a friend or a member of their family mis treats them for their love of their Saviour or when someone says something unkind about them for being a Christian, they are not strong enough to continue to choose the right. Those who belong to the Saviour should obey Him regardless of what others may say to them or do to them. Like the Saviour, they must say, “I must preach the kingdom of God.” END.
