TASMANIA POLICE Benjamin Duffey Acting Inspector

D uring this period of upheaval with COVID-19, the team from the Licensing Section of Tasmania Police, continue to visit licensed premises in the south of the State. Premises such as bottle shops and restaurants are attended in order to check on the welfare of owners/staff and to answer any questions that they may have. The team is pleased to see that most businesses are proactive in their approach to daily business through the use of furniture to section off areas from staff and customers (i.e. physically using tables, bollards and high vis tape) as a boarder that provides staff and community members with 1.5 metres protective distance from orders and pick-ups. Signs that ask customers to only enter one at a time and to wait until their turn to enter after the previous customer has left and the use of protective face masks and gloves where possible has been adopted. Staff have also been encouraged to call for police assistance should they have any concerns about customers not adhering to

the precautions or customers displaying aggression towards staff. The team has also noted that LAGB have been prepared to issue businesses with short term special permits to allow the sale of takeaway alcohol with a meal. Many restaurant’s and takeaways in the south now have these permit’s which are issued with no fee by LAGB. Should a business be in receipt of such a permit then they must display the permit for it to be valid and ensure that no alcohol is sold to youths with a take away order, therefore IDs should be checked. The Licensing Team send their best wishes to all the members of the THA and their members during this difficult time. If any Licensees have any questions or concerns do not hesitate in contacting staff at Southern Licensing Services within Tasmania Police via the following means: Phone: (03) 6173 2758 Email: southern.licensing@police.tas.gov.au
