Some hymnals credit Edgar Page, but the writer’s complete name was Edgar Page Stites. Very little is known of his history, except that he was a native of New Jersey, a ship builder, and a cousin of Eliza E. Hewitt ( “More About Jesus,” “W ill There Be Any Stars In My Crown,” etc.). On a visit to a Methodist camp meeting in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, about the year 1875, Stites wrote the poem beginning “ I’ve reached the land of corn and wine.” A musical setting was provided by John R. Sweney, camp - meeting song-leader. “ Sorrow and sighing shall flee away” (Isa. 35:10) was the basis of the poem. Sweney was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, December 31, 1837. During the Civil War he was the leader of a military band. Following the war he mastered the violin and piano, and became a noted choral conductor. For more than twenty-five years he taught music in the Penn sylvania Military Academy. (R. Kelso Carter, composer of “ Standing On The Promises,” was a professor in the same school.) A spiritual crisis diver ted his interests, and he spent his last twenty-eight years in religious work, becoming a noted gospel song composer; his services were much in demand as a musical director for camp meetings and conventions. He engaged in the publishing of gospel songbooks with William J. Kirkpat rick ( “ ’Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus” ), and together they published more than sixty different books. Sweney’s outstanding compositions included “ More About Jesus,” “ There Is Sunshine In My Soul,” “ Beulah Land,” and others. When he died, (West Chester, Pennsylvania, April 10, 1899) Ira D. Sankey sang “ Beulah Land” at his funeral.
