OWNERS & TRAINERS – CHELTENHAM RACECOURSE
T he team here at Cheltenham Racecourse wish you every success during the forthcoming season and look forward to welcoming you here with your runners. This booklet provides you with all the information that you might need for the season ahead, including information on the race programme, racecourse facilities and the experience we aim to deliver to Owners & Trainers.
Jennifer Doris leads our Owners & Trainers Team and should you have any questions or queries please contact her via the details listed on the back page.
The Grounds Team led by Alastair King and supported by Nathan Williams, continue to strive to make improvements both on track and in other related areas. This summer has seen further drainage projects on course and the resurfacing of the unsaddling enclosure. Following the 2024 Festival, we have conducted a thorough review of the race programme to identify areas we can make improvements to match the current horse population. We have reached the conclusions detailed below using data from a variety of sources and conducting private meetings with select individuals and organisations.
The objectives we set at the start of the process were as follows;
◆ To provide a programme that attracts the best horses in Britain, Ireland and France
◆ Deliver competitive racing, across all races
◆ Retain a strengthening focus on equine welfare considerations
◆ Deliver benefits to jump racing that extend beyond those realised at the Festival itself
◆ Adapt and innovate to ensure the Festival is relevant for its time
Having reviewed the data and considered the views of those we spoke with, the changes we are making for the 2025 Festival are as follows;
2
OWNERS & TRAINERS – CHELTENHAM RACECOURSE
◆ The Grade 1 2m4f Novice Chase will be removed and replaced with a Class 1, 2m4f Novice Open Handicap Chase
◆ The Grade 2 NH Chase will become a Novice Handicap Chase (0-145) and be open to professional riders
◆ The Glenfarclas Cross Country race will change to a Limited Handicap
◆ The run requirement for horses running in Open Handicaps will increase from 3 to 4 for Chases and 4 to 5 for Hurdles
◆ The penalty structure will be removed from the Grade 2 Ryanair Mares Novices Hurdle
◆ Winners of the Pertemps Series Qualifiers will receive a ballot exemption from the Final at the Festival (providing they are within the handicap at declaration stage) We believe the changes detailed above will improve the competitiveness of the Festival and wider jump season, providing opportunities for the best horses to compete against each other and create an exciting event for those who are competing, and those who watch the sport. The Frequent Runner Scheme with prizes for trainers who have supported Jockey Club Southwest Racecourses the most throughout the season will continue again this year. As in previous years, the two categories remain as trainers with 40 or above horses in training and those with 39 or fewer. Full details can be found on our Owners and Trainers webpage. With the season opening at the Showcase fixture on Friday 25th October and much to look forward to in the season ahead, we look forward to welcoming you here and wish you every success.
Jon Pullin Head of Racing, and Clerk of the Course, Cheltenham
