Wellbridge PT: Is Back Pain Slowing You Down?

PATI ENT SUCCESS SPOTL IGHT

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL PHYSICAL THERAPY MONTH!

I am 44 years old and I’ve had recurring lower back pain my whole life. A year and a half ago I had lower back surgery which eased my pain for a while until I had another flare up a few months ago. After going through physical therapy with Jessica, my pain was gone. Then I began stretching sessions with Kerry. The stretches, which include the hamstrings, calves, quadriceps, and hips, have made me more flexible and have kept me out of back pain. I feel great after a stretching session. Aside from helping my back, I leave the clinic feeling relaxed. I highly recommend Kerry. She’s knowledgeable, skilled and super nice! - David L.

For this year’s National Physical Therapy month, the American Physical Therapy Association is focusing on American’s misuse of opioids. Every year millions of Americans use opioids to manage pain.

Doctor-prescribed opioids are appropriate in some cases, but they just mask the pain—and reliance on opioids has led to the worst drug crisis in American history. Physical therapists treat pain through movement, hands-on care, and patient education—and by increasing physical activity you can also reduce your risk of other chronic diseases. A recent study published in Health Services Research found that patients who saw a physical therapist before trying other treatments for low back pain were 89% less likely to need an opioid prescription.
