Associations Show Support For Deposit Programs The Can Manufacturers Institute,Glass Packaging Institute and National Association for PET Container Resources have released a joint statement supporting improved deposit pro- gram designs. The associations said deposit systems lead to higher recycling rates, as well as to better quality material. According to a joint news release, data shows a stark con- trast between recycling rates in deposit states versus nonde- posit states in the country.According to the Container Recy- cling Institute, in 2018, in the 10 states with deposit systems, recycling rates for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, glass bottles and aluminum beverage cans were 62 percent, 64 percent and 77 percent, respectively. That’s compared with countrywide recovery rates of 28 percent, 40 percent and 46 percent, respectively. The organizations also say the increase in deposits can de- crease litter, provide more pure material beneficial to each of the industries they represent and produce a resilient sup- ply of material needed to make new beverage containers. The Alliance to End Plastic Waste (Alliance), a global non- profit dedicated to ending plastic waste, and the Center for Regenerative Design and Collaboration (CRDC), a construc- tion materials manufacturer based in Heredia, Costa Rica, plan to scale up a solution to convert hard-to-recycle plastic scrap into a concrete additive for building and construction applications. The two will expand CRDC’s footprint in North America with a 14,000-square-foot production plant inYork, Pennsyl- vania. CRDC also will scale up its existing production plant in Costa Rica from small-scale commercial production to a full-scale commercial capacity of 90 tons per day when fully operational by 2022. Hard-To-Recycle Plastic Conversion Firm Forms The CRDC said the two facilities will process up to 24,000 metric tons of plastic scrap per year combined. They will accept all types of mixed plastic scrap that would otherwise be sent to landfill or be incinerated to produce the concrete additive, Resin8.The product is suitable for numerous appli- cations, including concrete blocks and pavers, precast con- crete and poured-in-place concrete. Berry Global Joins Recycling Partnership Coalition Berry Global Group, a packaging manufacturer based in Evansville, Indiana, has joined The Recycling Partnership’s Polypropylene Recycling Coalition. The coalition is aimed at increasing recycling access for polypropylene (PP). The company said the announcement extends its goal of enhancing recycling infrastructure as part of the quest toward a circular economy. Berry joins Polypropylene Re- cycling Coalition steering committee members like Keurig Dr. Pepper, Braskem, NextGen Consortium and the Walmart Foundation.
