10 TIPS TO HELP YOU FIND YOUR VOICE ON SOCIAL. WRITE BETTER POSTS. AND HAVE MORE FUN.

BE MORE SPECIFIC The key to writing well is making choices. Don’t be safe, or lazy. Speaking in generalities is a waste of everyone’s time. If you want to get attention, earn it. Think before you write. Then say what you want to say, in exactly the way you want to say it. Your voice is 100% determined by the words you choose to write. So choose well. Choose weird. Choose to follow your gut. Your heart. Whatever. Just don’t choose be boring.

SAYING EVERYTHING IS SAYING NOTHING The fastest way to be boring is to try to look cool, to everyone, at once. You have to narrow your focus. Everything you write cannot be about everything you have to say. No one will read it, and more importantly no one will care. So choose your topic, your POV, your audience, and your goal. Then once you’ve found your purpose, go ahead and write something, about one thing. Because one thing, is all anyone will ever remember.

DON’T BE A PARROT A smart person once said, if you’ve read it before, don’t write it again. That’s a pretty tall order, but the thought behind it is worth striving for. When you’re writing, try to think about how you can add your own personal experience into it. Don’t just say what other people are saying, because it gives people no reason to care. You are unique. Your story is different. Your life is yours and yours alone. So inject some of who you are into what you write.

HAVE A GOAL
Before you write something, decide why. What is the outcome you’re trying to achieve? Are you looking for leads, or followers, or comments, or are you just dying to show off that cute picture of your dog in its new doggie tuxedo? Whatever your goal is, it’s got to be your north star. You can almost reverse engineer what you write based on what you want people to take away. Once you know what you want people to feel, or do, or remember, it will be easier to create content that gets them there

READ OTHER PEOPLE’S WRITING Before you write, read. It’s the oldest rule in the book and for good reason. If you’re feeling like you have nothing to say, read what other people are saying. Sure this rule sounds contradictory to tip #3, but it’s not. You aren’t here to copy. You’re here to get inspired. There’s a difference. You probably follow several accounts that you love. Even if it has nothing to do with real estate, you can learn a lot from the good ones. Chances are they are consciously or subconsciously following these rules. Read their writing, internalize it, then write your own version.

LEARN THE PLATFORM YOU’RE ON
You aren’t writing a personal journal. You’re writing for social media. Which means it’s meant for other people to see. If you want them to like what you write, it's important to sweat not just what you say but how you say it. Take the time to learn how people use the platform, and then learn to walk the walk yourself. No one wants to see a pamphlet in their feed. Find out what you want to say, and then say it in a way that feels natural and authentic to the platform.

DON’T TRY TOO HARD
While being safe is a recipe for failure, trying too hard is also a no-go. Write in a way that’s authentic to you and your life. All of us want to be cool, but avoid the pitfalls of slang and jargon. Write the way you’d speak in real life. There's nothing wrong with having some fun and being self-aware. But if you're trying to take a culture-shortcut, people will sense it right away. So be yourself and don't try too hard. Avoid using terms that won’t stand the test of time like: lit, swag, no cap, deadass etc.

PEOPLE AREN'T STUPID THEY’RE BUSY
If your motivation behind a post is just to make more money, people will sniff it out and keep scrolling. And they’ll never be back because you wasted their time. So respecting other’s time is the key to getting, and more importantly, keeping, their attention. Have something to say that brings value to their feed before you ask them for anything. When you keep the mindset that you’re giving people something and not asking people for anything, you’ll be surprised what you get.

SAY IT IN HALF The best way to say something is to say it in an efficient way that conveys the idea and gets the point across clearly, without wasting words, so it's quick and easy to understand. In other words: Simple is better. Editing is the key to writing. So write something and then rewrite it with the goal of using half the words. It might feel impossible to cut anything out at first, but if you give yourself the goal to say it in half the words, you'll find there’s a lot of fat to cut. Do that everytime, and you’ll be writing leaner, smarter, and more compelling posts in no time.

READ BEFORE YOU POST
Read what you write before you post it. This is obvious, but so many of us don’t do it. Don’t just assume your stream of consciousness writing is your best writing. Chances are it’s not, so read it out loud. Don’t let your mind autocorrect your writing and actually hear how the words sound out loud. If you follow none of the other tips in this document, do this and your writing will improve. Plus, you’ll have half as many typos.
