Celebrating a Special Anniversary 25 YEARS LATER

T his year, my wife, Chandana, and I will have been married for 25 years. Shortly after we were married, we left India and started our life in the U.S. It’s really been the only home we have known together as husband and wife. It’s hard to imagine that we have been together for this long, but through the many ups and downs, it’s been amazing to watch our lives unfold together. I believe one of the strongest points Chandana and I have is our ability to complement one another. Running a business takes a lot of the strengths that I believe I have, but you cannot be superhuman. We have a lot of weaknesses, too, but we often cover each other’s struggles. She is always on the go, but I prefer to be laid-back. She’s very health- centered and has always focused on her well-being. Wellness and weight have always been a challenge for me.

a sense of calm. She’s very patient with everything and everyone she works with, often going the extra mile for those she works with on a daily basis. I’m focused on what I need to accomplish and can sometimes have little patience for other aspects. Chandana adds that flair of patience that I often need a reminder about. When it comes to running a business, this has proven to be a powerful combination. This combination translates to our parenting styles too. Our children have learned where our strengths lie and who they can rely on for what. It’s created a stronger relationship between us and our children, and I feel we have created a good family bond together. This balance we have struck between one another has made for a great pairing. We complement each other in ways that go beyond the day-to-day, and it’s allowed our relationship, parenting, and business to grow.

While our traits may differ and play off one another, I believe the foundation of our relationship is the fact that we share the same values. We both appreciate hard work and doing what’s best for our clients. We both want what’s best for our children and encourage them to do what makes them happy. The superficial stuff like our temperaments and tactics may vary, but we are united on the values that mean the most in our lives. That’s the secret to an “opposites attract” kind of marriage.

While I may not be a very patient person, Chandana approaches everything with

“This balance we have struck between one another has made for a great pairing. We complement each other in ways that go beyond the day-to-day, and it’s allowed our relationship, parenting, and business to grow.”

PRACTICE PAIN RELIEF The Benefits of Meditation

M editation has different meanings for different people. Traditionally, the act of focusing one’s mind has been used in religious and spiritual practices around the globe. More recently, it’s become a popular method of relaxation. Now, new research shows that this ancient practice may have yet another benefit: pain management. In 2008, the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey found that over 100 million adults in the U.S. suffer from chronic pain due to conditions like arthritis and debilitating injuries. Because of this, care providers have become focused on finding ways to help patients manage these persistent aches. The sensation of pain is caused by a complex interaction of biological and cognitive factors, leading scientists to study how mental exercises like meditation can aid in pain relief. Anecdotal evidence regarding meditation’s ability to reduce pain has existed for as long as the practice itself. However, modern technology has given researchers the means to accurately measure the effectiveness of this age-old tradition. The Department of Health and Human Services has cited MRI brain scans as proof that meditation can lead to moderate pain reduction. These scans revealed that the same areas of the brain stimulated by painkillers are activated when the mind is in a meditative state. This supports the accounts of those who have reported better functionality after meditative sessions. NEED A BOOST? As spring kicks off, many people will be tempted to grab a Monster, Red Bull, or Rockstar to get through the day. Energy drinks may give you a quick boost, but the high levels of caffeine and sugar can lead to migraines and increased anxiety. If over-consumed, these drinks can even lead to Type 2 diabetes. To avoid these health hazards, try out a few of these natural energy boosters instead. ASHWAGANDHA Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub found mostly in India. As part of the Ayurveda system, an alternative medicine practice from India, it’s also known as “Indian ginseng.” The Alternative Medicine Review published a study indicating ashwagandha increases the body’s resilience to physical and mental stress by lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol by 28%. Ashwagandha can also help you through long workouts and the 9-to-5 grind because it may also improve brain function, including memory. You can get ashwagandha in pill form at most convenience stores around the world. CREATINE Many people don’t realize creatine is a natural energy booster because they get it mostly in processed, high-sugar energy drinks.

With the ongoing tragedy of the opioid crisis, there is a dire need for pain management strategies that are noninvasive and not habit- forming, such as physical therapy. Meditation is easily accessible and can be used in conjunction with other pain relief strategies. Whether you sign up for guided meditation sessions, download one of the many mindfulness apps on the market today, or simply make time to sit and clear your mind for 30 minutes, it’s easy to add meditation to your normal routine.

Natural Supplements to Increase Your Energy

However, in doses less than 5 grams, creatine provides impressive benefits during high-intensity activities, short-duration exercises, and sports, including football, shot put, and weightlifting. This compound is found in red meat, pork, poultry, and fish, and when consumed, it releases phosphates that give your body

a quick burst of energy. Ingesting more than 5 grams, though, will leave you feeling bloated with a lot of stomach discomfort. Creatine powder can be found at most wellness stores.

BEETROOT POWDER Beetroot powder is made from the roots of the beet plant and is rich in nitrate. Nitrate relaxes blood vessels, creating increased blood flow and oxygen delivery. This enables your body to produce energy more efficiently and maintain energy levels, making beetroot powder a great aid for endurance sports like running, soccer, and biking. In the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, a study reported that athletes could work out for 25% longer when they used beetroot powder. Fatigue didn’t set in until much later in their workout, which improved their training and performance.

This spring, say goodbye to energy drinks and get the boost you need with one of these natural energy supplements.

Busting the Myth of the ‘Perfect’ Shoe

of a good shoe should be comfort. Do your toes have enough room? Is it loose or tight in your toes and heel? Do your arches feel supported? Can you easily move in the shoes? Could extra padding or supports offer you more comfort? When you feel pain while walking or running, your shoes may be to blame. They may not offer the support you need on a day-to-day basis, and it may be time to search for alternatives. But your

As you walk through the shoe section at your local department store, your head may start to spin with all the available options.

shoes could be innocent when it comes to identifying the culprit of your pain. Typically, pain from walking or running actually stems from injury, poor form, or damage that you sustained through normal wear and tear.

If only you had a fairy godmother who could conjure up the perfect pair! But here’s the secret: The “perfect” shoe does not exist.

A physical therapist can help you determine the source of your pain. Noninvasive tests will determine the root cause, and together, your therapist and you will develop a plan that stimulates your body’s natural ability to heal through strength, movement, and growth. Instead of treating a symptom — buying new shoes — you will find true healing by diagnosing and treating the real persisting issue. Don’t buy into the hype. If foot, knee, or hip pain is plaguing your life, our team can help. Learn more about your options by calling (618) 529-4360.

That’s right, there’s no shoe that’s the best simply because of its features. There are

exceptions, of course. High-heeled shoes and flip-flops offer very little support and are not made with your foot’s health in mind. Frequently wearing these shoes can damage your feet and worsen any pain or complications you may have. However, at the most basic level, the idea that there is one shoe designed to perfectly fit and support everyone’s feet is a myth! You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars to find the “perfect” pair of shoes. The most important aspect
