Celebrating a Special Anniversary 25 YEARS LATER

T his year, my wife, Chandana, and I will have been married for 25 years. Shortly after we were married, we left India and started our life in the U.S. It’s really been the only home we have known together as husband and wife. It’s hard to imagine that we have been together for this long, but through the many ups and downs, it’s been amazing to watch our lives unfold together. I believe one of the strongest points Chandana and I have is our ability to complement one another. Running a business takes a lot of the strengths that I believe I have, but you cannot be superhuman. We have a lot of weaknesses, too, but we often cover each other’s struggles. She is always on the go, but I prefer to be laid-back. She’s very health- centered and has always focused on her well-being. Wellness and weight have always been a challenge for me.

a sense of calm. She’s very patient with everything and everyone she works with, often going the extra mile for those she works with on a daily basis. I’m focused on what I need to accomplish and can sometimes have little patience for other aspects. Chandana adds that flair of patience that I often need a reminder about. When it comes to running a business, this has proven to be a powerful combination. This combination translates to our parenting styles too. Our children have learned where our strengths lie and who they can rely on for what. It’s created a stronger relationship between us and our children, and I feel we have created a good family bond together. This balance we have struck between one another has made for a great pairing. We complement each other in ways that go beyond the day-to-day, and it’s allowed our relationship, parenting, and business to grow.

While our traits may differ and play off one another, I believe the foundation of our relationship is the fact that we share the same values. We both appreciate hard work and doing what’s best for our clients. We both want what’s best for our children and encourage them to do what makes them happy. The superficial stuff like our temperaments and tactics may vary, but we are united on the values that mean the most in our lives. That’s the secret to an “opposites attract” kind of marriage.

M editation has different meanings for different people. Traditionally, the act of focusing one’s mind has been used in religious and spiritual practices around the globe. More recently, it’s become a popular method of relaxation. Now, new research shows that this ancient practice may have yet another benefit: pain management. In 2008, the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey found that over 100 million adults in the U.S. suffer from chronic pain due to conditions like arthritis and debilitating injuries. These scans revealed that the same areas of the brain stimulated by painkillers are activated when the mind is in a meditative state. As spring kicks off, many people will be tempted to grab a Monster, Red Bull, or Rockstar to get through the day. Energy drinks may give you a quick boost, but the high levels of caffeine and sugar can lead to migraines and increased anxiety. If over-consumed, these drinks can even lead to Type 2 diabetes. To avoid these health hazards, try out a few of these natural energy boosters instead. ASHWAGANDHA Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub found mostly in India. As part of the Ayurveda system, an alternative medicine practice from India, it’s also known as “Indian ginseng.” The Alternative Medicine Review published a study indicating ashwagandha increases the body’s resilience to physical and mental stress by lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol by 28%. Ashwagandha can also help you through long workouts and the 9-to-5 grind because it may also improve brain function, including memory. INGREDIENTS

• 2 salmon fillets (10 oz total) • 1 tsp salt • 2 tbsp ghee • 1 tbsp garlic, minced • 1 tbsp fresh rosemary, chopped • Zest from 1 orange • 1/3 cup fresh-squeezed orange juice • 1 tsp tapioca starch

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oven to 425 F, and line a sheet pan with parchment paper. 2. Salt each fillet with 1/2 tsp salt. Bake for 6–8 minutes. 3. In a saucepan, combine ghee and garlic and cook over medium heat for 3 minutes. 4. Add rosemary, zest, and juice. Cook for another 3 minutes. 5. Stir in tapioca starch until lumps disappear and mixture thickens. 6. Plate salmon and top with orange sauce.
