AWay to Share KnowledgeWith Our Community The History of Our Workshop Program

Four years ago, we held our first practice workshop. At the time, I had no idea if it would be a success. But here we are today, hosting two per month to regularly packed crowds. The development and expansion of our workshop program has been a labor of love, a way for us to meet new people, and, above all, a way to give something back to our community. In fact, that’s how we hit on the idea of hosting them in the first place. Our clinical team wanted to share knowledge about physical therapy and help people understand more about pain. How would we achieve that? Well, we thought opening our doors and inviting local residents was a good place to start. We set a date, placed an ad in the paper, and crossed our fingers for a good turnout. Certainly, we weren’t perfect from the start, but we sensed that people really valued their time at the workshop. Over the years, we improved our presentation and expanded our offerings.

First and foremost, we hope the workshops are informative, but we also aim to give people a sense of who we are as a practice. We love what we do, and I hope that comes across during the course of a workshop. It’s awesome to be able to interact with the community directly, answer questions, and shed a little light on the ways physical therapy can improve people’s quality of life. I want to thank every person who’s attended a workshop over the years. Without your presence, there’d be no reason for us to keep going. After four years of back pain education, we’ll be retiring our workshop on the topic for a little while after an upcoming event. If you’ve never been to one, now’s the time to do so. Don’t worry, though, we’ll have plenty of shoulder and arthritis workshops to fill up the schedule until back pain returns in the fall. When I think back to every new initiative we’ve begun in our history as a practice, I think we’ve had more winners than stinkers. It’s hard to imagine that any of them have been a bigger winner than our workshops.

The first workshops we did were on the oft-requested topic of back pain and sciatica. It was a natural place to start. I think that in those days, we were hosting one workshop every other month. Soon, though, we began including a shoulder pain and rotator cuff workshop as well. Just recently, we began offering one on arthritis pain. We’ve also increased the frequency of events. What can I say? We love doing them, and as long as people show up, we will continue to have them regularly. I’d be willing to guess that our workshops have introduced Professional Physical Therapy to hundreds, if not thousands, of people. At first, I figured our audience would consist largely of curious pain sufferers seeking an alternative to surgery and medication. While those people do show up, they are far from the majority. We have physicians, people receiving therapy at other clinics, those who come on behalf of a family member, and more.

Beware These Retirement Spending Mistakes

If you have even the slightest doubt, have a loved one take a look at the offer to ensure you’re not being scammed. Never provide your private financial data to a source you don’t absolutely trust. TCHOTCHKES Many of us have walked into the house of an older relative to find a room full of American Girl dolls or a display case of Candlewick glassware. Collecting can be a rewarding hobby when done in moderation, but amassing junk simply for its own sake is a waste of money and space. Make sure you’re acquiring objects because you truly want to treasure them. RUSHED RELOCATIONS In general, real estate-based purchases can be extremely beneficial for retirees. The exception to this rule is a spur-of-the-moment relocation in order to be closer to your family or a retirement community. Because real estate transactions are so expensive, it’s best to approach them with extreme care and due diligence.

The bulk of retirement planning is spent discussing how you will save money in the years leading up to the end of your career, but that’s only half of the picture. Once you enter retirement, your focus shifts to the smartest way to divest your money for both your own enjoyment and your continued financial security. There are countless ways to wisely spend your nest egg, such as taking trips, providing for the education of your grandchildren, and more. However, this article isn’t about good ideas. Instead, let’s talk about some of the worst ways to spend your retirement funds. TIMESHARES The appeal of a timeshare seems obvious. It’s a space of your own for a few weeks of the year, and you get to enjoy a nice change of pace from your regular environment. The problem is that these properties are full of hidden costs and have been outpaced by other vacationing options. In a world where you can book an Airbnb with just a few clicks, timeshares are poised to become a relic of a past age. ONLINE SCAMS Hackers and cyberscammers love to prey on the elderly. As gross as it may sound, they know that older generations tend to be less tech savvy than

TheWater’s More Than Fine Why Swimming Is Excellent Exercise for Everyone

you want something more strenuous, you can rack up the laps until you’re completely spent. You can use swimming for short bursts of exercise or longer endurance sessions. There really is no limit to the ways you can structure aquatic exercise.

Swimming is one of the great joys of summer. There’s nothing quite like beating the heat with a dip, whether in the ocean, a lake, or a pool. In addition to being fun, swimming can be beneficial for your health. Here are a few reasons why you should consider taking more than a few dives this summer. IT’S EASY ON YOUR BODY Archimedes’ principle, an age-old scientific law, states, “Any object, wholly or partially immersed in a fluid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.” Essentially, it means that an object in water moves more freely than it does on land. Due to this fact of nature, swimming is a great exercise for people with sore joints and other issues. Compared to running, swimming won’t put undue strain on your body, no matter how much you do it. IT’S ADAPTIVE There’s a way to swim no matter your age or ability level. If you want a light workout, you can simply wade around, paddle a bit, and tread water. If

IT’S MULTIDIMENSIONAL At its core, swimming is an aerobic exercise. However, because water offers some resistance, albeit minimal, it also allows for moderate strength training. Being able to strengthen your cardio as well as your muscles in one workout is a win-win.

IT’S RELAXING Even if you are trying to maximize the gains from an aquatic

workout, it’s hard to complain when you can relax on the shore or by the pool after you’re done. According to marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols, simply being in the water is “a mildly meditative state characterized by calm, peacefulness, unity, and a sense of general happiness and satisfaction with life in the moment.”

16 small potato rolls, toasted

2 lbs. ground chuck beef, 20% lean 8 slices melting cheese (like American, Swiss, Muenster, or cheddar)

Salt and pepper, to taste

Your favorite burger accompaniment

Directions 1. Divide beef into 16 evenly sized balls.

2. Rip cheese into roughly equal pieces, creating 16 equal portions. 3. Using your index finger, create a small indentation in each ball. 4. Fill indention with cheese and pinch meat around to seal. Then gently form balls into 3/4 -inch-thick patties. Season patties. 5. Meanwhile, heat a cast-iron skillet to medium-high. 6. Lightly coat skillet with oil and cook patties in batches. Brown one side undisturbed, about 3 minutes. Carefully flip and cook until desired doneness, about 3 minutes for medium. 7. Serve on toasted potato rolls with your favorite accompaniments.

Zucchini and corn reach their peak during July, and these grilling favorites pair well with steaks, burgers, hot dogs, or fish. Go low-carb by stuffing your zucchini with vegetables and a protein for a charred skillet bowl. Even better, add some corn to your fresh salsa to add an extra zing to your tacos. Regardless of how you utilize them, zucchini and corn are sweetest, juiciest, and freshest during July. GO GREEN Filling your plate with plenty of greens is never easier than in July.
