The more disciplined you are with your commitment to practicing and showing up, the greater the growth in your skillset and the strength of your partnership. Although dancing, especially performance routines, can be very tiring and demanding, I find it very liberating and therapeutic. There’s nothing quite like releasing the stresses of the day and letting your mind fall into the structure of the music and the precision of the routine.

DANCING

After a busy week, I like to unwind and release stress through dancing. Over the past eight years, I’ve learned and performed both Salsa and Bachata. Dancing forces me to get out of my own head and shifts my focus to the rhythm of the music and the movements of my partner. This hobby has been the perfect pairing for my highly technical job as it allows me to explore and develop my creative side and my communication skills. Performing as a dancer is very different from social dancing. You can’t make up the moves as you go, it’s not simply about feeling the music. Performing requires attention to detail and ensuring you have a strong rapport with your partner. There is an element of mutual trust as you read one another’s body mechanics and move fluidly together, aligned with the speed and motion of the dance. This also means your partner’s level of discipline and commitment are just as important as your own, and finding the right person is essential.
