Maintaining Exam Integrity Through Passing Score Analysis — Thank You to Our Volunteers!
Following item analyses, BICSI recently conducted passing score analyses, also known as cut score studies, for four certification exams: Registered Communications Distribution Designer® (RCDD®), Registered Telecommunications Project Manager® (RTPM®), Data Center Design Consultant® (DCDC®), and BICSI Installer 2, Optical Fiber® (INSTF®). This important step helps ensure that our exams continue to measure competence fairly and accurately. What Is a Passing Score Analysis? A passing score analysis, or cut score study, is a structured process used to determine the minimum level of knowledge and skills a candidate must demonstrate to earn certification. Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) carefully review exam content and evaluate the performance expected of a minimally competent practitioner. Their collective input is used to establish a defensible passing score that reflects the knowledge required for success in the field. Why It Matters Passing score analyses help maintain the validity, fairness, and credibility of our certification programs. Rather than relying on an arbitrary percentage, passing scores are based on expert judgment and industry expectations. This ensures that certified
individuals have demonstrated the level of competence needed to perform their roles effectively while preserving the value and integrity of the credential. A Heartfelt Thank You We extend our sincere appreciation to the dedicated volunteers who participated in these passing score analyses. Their expertise, thoughtful discussions, and commitment to excellence are essential to ensuring our certification programs remain relevant, defensible, and respected throughout the industry. These volunteers generously contributed their time and professional knowledge to help establish fair and appropriate passing standards for our programs. Their efforts directly support the quality of BICSI certification programs and the professionals who rely on them.
