Supportive Environment
In addition to communication challenges, autistic individuals may have sensory and other behavioral challenges that can include hyper- or hypo-sensitivity to sounds, sights, etc.; difficulty with change; repetitive movements such as rocking, pacing, flicking fingers, or waving arms; and verbal and physical aggression to oneself and others during stressful situations. While every person’s needs are unique, strategies such as ensuring a calm and structured environment, sensory accommodations when responding to calls (e.g., reducing noise, minimizing bright lights), physical considerations for personal space, and appropriate de-escalation techniques can be ways to provide a more supportive environment for autistic individuals. NJIT Police Department is one example of a law enforcement entity actively working to provide autistic individuals with a supportive environment through their autism-friendly sensory bags that are kept in patrol vehicles.
