from a sustainability standpoint, how do you find the prop- er combination of structure and fiber? That has been and will be, a task of ours. Ssome of the design software that’s out there today, the cutting tables and things like that, al- low us to really fine tune that quickly. You couple that with a testing lab in-house, and you can do a lot to really narrow down what that customer demand is. It’s incumbent on the corrugated manufacturer to really pay attention, to stay close to that customer, understand what those needs are, and then they’re obliged to deliver to that. And that means better equipment. (So much tech- nology) has been driven by the desire to take fiber out as much as you can. I think the industry has done a remark- able job in that regard, all the way from the paper makers through corrugator equipment to converting equipment. Then we have to be much better operators, and that re- quires us to go through exhaustive training of our machine operators. They’ve gotten really good at it, much better than when I was running a machine 40 years ago. Arvanigian : We have a tremendous opportunity in this industry, and I think we’re taking advantage of it. Plastic has become a really dirty word. There are a tremendous amount of opportunities for corrugated to replace plastic. We have one of the greatest products ever in the plan- et. Name one thing that was invented that’s better than corrugated. At the end of the day, we make a really cool product, and it’s constantly evolving, even though it’s a mature industry. I think the opportunities in our industry are endless, and they’ll continue to continue to grow. Pallini: From a perspective of carbon footprint that is something very important to the coming generation that will be the future leaders of this industry. Fosber is looking at ways to continue to advance our position to try and be- come zero carbon footprint, which is a challenging thing to do in our industry, in the machinery and in the box making side. But there’s a lot of strides that can be made with the right effort. And we need to promote that more so they understand that we are a green industry already, but we’re working to even do better. McNay: The interview process today is much different than it was 20 or 30 years ago. I mean, it was pretty much one-sided. It was the employer looking at the prospective employee. Now that interview is a two-way street. They’re interviewing you, trying to find out if you have the right culture, you have the right community support, what’s your sustainability initiatives, how do you treat your employees, what are the opportunities for growth, am I go- ing to be a decisionmaker? They’re assessing you as much as you are assessing them in that interview. Arvanigian: This is one of the few businesses that I know of where you can start out on a plant floor running a press and wind up being CEO. If you talk about the Ameri- can dream where you go to work, you work hard, you can get ahead, this industry is the place.
