now. “He’s a real sweetheart,” Stevens said, re- garding Humphrey, a big Belgian/quarter- horse cross. “He’s reliable and he tries his best. He senses some of my mistakes and then tries to accept them and just move on. He’s a sensitive and smart horse.” Stevens trains with Humphrey under the direction of her coach, Sian Fernandez- Thomas, at the International Equestrian Centre inWendover. They also do their dres- sage competition runs at the centre. Video- tapes of their performances are then sent to show judges for review and rating in the Canadian national paradressage division. Right now Stevens’goal is to work her way up through the rankings to the Fédération Equitation Internationale novice class. But she has her future target set on qualifying for Canada’s Paralympics dressage program.
WENDOVER | Trudy Stevens has a goal and with help from Humphrey, she is making steady progress towards achieving her aim. The Rockland woman is competing in dressage, a style of equitation that de- mands precision work and on-the-mark timing from both horse and rider. So far the 61-year-old rider has scored first over- all in her first set of competitions for her experience level. What makes her achieve- ment even more impressive is that Stevens depends altogether on Humphrey to keep track of where they are going because she cannot, being totally blind for several years
Wildcats aim for playoffs
ROCKLAND | One game is all that stands between a chance at a title and the end of the season for the Wildcats varsity girls basketball. The Rockland District High School Wild- cats hammered Alexandria’s Le Sommet 63- 21 on Oct. 28. That leaves the Wildcats with just one game left in their season schedule on Oct. 30 against the St. Francis Xavier Fal- cons. If they win they finish fourth overall
in their division and qualify for the regional playoffs next month. “We have improved a lot over the season,” said Coach Bill Foster, “so we definitely have a chance.” High-point shooters for the Wildcats against Le Sommet on Monday were Madi- son Phillips and Marie-Eve Mathieu, each of them scoring 14 points against the oppos- ing team.
