EUROPEAN STANDARD BS EN ISO 11611:2007 Protective clothing for use in welding and allied processes. The standard contains two classes with specific performance requirements.
Class 1 Class 2
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY PPE Please note that during the welding operation we would always recommend the use of primary PPE such as a protective apron, gauntlets etc. The welding garments should be regarded as secondary protection. Use of primary PPE will improve the level of protection for the wearer and reduce the risk of skin burns. It will also increase the life of the garment.
CLASS 1 Manual welding techniques with light formation of spatter and drops e.g.:
Gas welding TIG welding MIG welding Micro plasma welding
Brazing Spot welding MMA welding (with rutile covered electrode)
Operating machines e.g.:
Oxygen cutting Plasma cutting Resistance welding
Thermal spraying Bench welding
CLASS 2 Manual welding techniques with heavy formation of spatter and drops e.g.:
GUIDE
MMA welding (with basic or cellulose covered electrode) MAG welding (with CO2 or mix gas) MIG welding (with high current)
Self-shielded flux cored arc welding Plasma cutting Gouging Oxygen cutting Thermal sprayin g
FLAME RETARDANT
ELECTRIC ARC
WELDING SPATTER
Operating machines e.g.:
Working in confined spaces Overhead welding and cutting Other constrained positions
