This Goes Out to My Role Model My Mother, Shirley Finney

In my family, we have a tradition of giving sussies. If you don’t know what a sussy is, it’s a small, unexpected gift you give someone for no reason at all. It could be something they need or just an item that made you think of them. Giving a sussy is a kind gesture to show your loved ones you’re thinking about them. Today, I want to give a sussy out to someone who means a lot to me. I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for her. So, this goes out to Shirley Finney, my amazing mother. My mom taught me a lot of things throughout my life. She is a role model and has inspired me in more ways than one. I wouldn’t have the work ethic, heart, passion or humor if it weren’t for her. The impact she’s had on my life will never be forgotten, and I can’t thank my mom enough for the sacrifices she’s made for me and our family. Shirley is a wonderful woman who has cast many ripples across the pond during her life. I’m honored to be her son, and I’m thankful I call her my mom. Like my mother, I wear multiple different hats in my life. Sometimes it can be overwhelming because I am being pulled in different directions daily. But when I find

MASSIAH BROWNE IS A YOUNG HERO!

with Fox 5 that her son acted out of instinct. Although he didn’t fully understand what was happening, he knew he had to do something. “[Massiah] is super empathetic, so for him to do something like that isn’t out of the ordinary. It’s just crazy that he’s only 7 and doing something like that,” says Browne’s father, Marcus.

In July 2021, 7-year-old Massiah Browne went to the pool with his family on one hot summer day. Browne has taken swim classes since he was a toddler and is described as a fish by his family because he loves to be in the water. But today, he’s known as a hero.

As Browne was jumping and splashing in the pool, he noticed something unusual. He saw a boy, who would later be

Although Browne doesn’t fully understand what he did and the praise he received because of his actions, he knows he is being called a hero. Because of this, Browne created a superhero name, Siah Fire, which suits him well. His friends are so proud of him and honored to say they are friends with a hero.

identified as a 3-year-old, at the bottom of the pool. Although Browne is a child himself, he knew something had to be done. Immediately, he swam down into 6 feet of water and grabbed the arm of the child. Browne managed to bring the toddler to the surface, and Browne’s 9-year-old relative, Savannah, helped them both get to solid ground. Savannah’s mother began performing CPR on the toddler until first responders arrived. The toddler was transported to the nearest hospital in critical condition and has since made a full recovery. Browne’s mother stated in an interview

Massiah, you may not understand the full significance of your actions, but your bravery and courage are inspiring. Thank you for your heroism — it will never go unnoticed. We can’t wait to see what kind of man and hero you become in your future!

No matter how busy my mom got, she never complained. Instead, she was very stoic and passed that trait down to me. Seeing my mother overcome situations and never letting pressure deter her gave me the experience and encouragement to do the same. I wouldn’t be the man I am today without my mom. She is my hero, even to this day. I can’t thank her enough for all the sacrifices she made for me and the impact she’s had on my life. So, thank you, Mom, for everything you’ve done for me. Your love, support and sacrifices never go unnoticed. I appreciate you so much, and I have no idea who or where I would be without you. Thank you for being my mom. I love you so much.

took care of me, my sister and the house and still worked full time as our church secretary. She showed me from a young age how to manage different responsibilities and do them successfully. I don’t know anyone who has a bigger heart than my mom. The amount of love she has for the people in her life and community is inspiring. She has served on multiple boards and commissions for our church and community. I remember how my mom used to help recent widows settle their estates and help people move into living facilities and visit them daily. Shirley was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Her love for her community rubbed off on me because I am on several boards today and have served on my church’s committee for 20 years. Recently, I helped one of my friends who recently lost her husband manage her estate and supported her through probate. Sometimes, I ask myself, “Why am I doing this?” But the answer is simple: My mother would have done the same.

Did you know that our brain, diet and mental health are connected? If you are making good dietary choices, it will lead to an increase in mental health. However, if you aren’t making proper choices, it could lead to a decline. Incorporating more brain food in your diet can benefit your brain and body’s performance in many ways. Here are four brain foods you can incorporate into your diet today. Fermented Foods Fermentation is the ancient practice of preserving food so it will last without refrigeration. These foods combine milk, vegetables and other raw ingredients with yeast. Fermented foods are great at enhancing your gut health and decreasing anxiety. Because fermented foods will benefit your gut, they will also support your immune response, improve digestion and manage weight. Spices Not only do spices add flavor to your meals, but they also have antioxidant properties. Researchers discovered that cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cardamom have several beneficial effects on your brain. Some spices can boost your mood, while others reduce inflammation, sharpen your memory, reduce stress, improve sleep and help protect brain cells. Walnuts Nuts are a great source of protein and healthy fats. But there is one nut that benefits your brain the most: walnuts. They have anti- inflammatory, antioxidant effects and omega-3 fatty acids that help improve your thinking and memory. Walnuts are great for older adults because of all of the cognitive benefits they contain. Coincidentally, the nut somewhat looks like a brain! Leafy Greens These greens contain vitamin E, carotenoids and flavonoids, which are nutrients that help protect against dementia and cognitive decline. Leafy greens also have a natural form of vitamin B9, which helps with red blood cell formations. So, add some kale, spinach, collards or broccoli into your meals. If you have difficulty eating greens, add them to smoothies for easier consumption. Here at October Kitchen, we aim to feed people nutritious and delicious meals. Our dishes will make your stomach and brain happy with our mouth-watering and healthy meals. So, try one of our meals today. Your tastebuds and brain will thank you later.
